View Full Version : Have you ever worn "Casual Clothing" to Slimelight

Ok I know the title will cause questions as to what is classified as casual but sensible people will get the drift... Male could be jeans and T shirt. I don't know what would classify as feminine casual. I'll let the women decide....

well, i don't dress up for it...
Seriously, i'm about 50/50...
Half the time I make some effort (generally not much - sue me) and the other half I wear what i always wear -> black combats and a black t-shirt.... (when i say "what I always wear" i mean it... obviously the articles in question change as and when washing is needed, but even now, while i'm sitting in work i'm still wearing black combats and a black t-shirt)
So you know, the times when I don't wear casual dress involve wearing a slightly more interesting t-shirt. I did say not much more effort.

I feel I should comment here........
Never worn casual to Slimes, I fear the ridicule, and I'd have even less chance of pulling!!

The dressing up ritual before slimes is absolutely..........great :>

the ritual's half the fun....
though there are some days when i can't be arsed and i end up in jupiter trousers and combination top... zero effort, and casual ish.

I guess i have a small advantage in hiding my casualness is that i don't own any jeans.
In fact, the number of items of clothing i have that aren't black can prolly be counted on my fingers. Maybe fingers of one hand....
I realise this is prolly nothing unusual among those on here, but I thought it made a semi-relevent comment, and i'm trying to get to 50 posts.

Sometimes I can't be bothered to even go, but my other half is practically addicted...the only way to get enough enthusiasm for it is put on some great dancing music and get dressed up, and I've even bought a new item of clothing especially if I felt particularly unexcited about going!

I voted yes
but then my idea of 'casual' is not exactly what most "normal" people would call casual :)

I have to say that dressing up is part of the 'going to a club' thang. Whether slimelight, full tilt or gossips...you've got to make an effort. I f you go out looking the same or similar to the day stuff, you don't feel special. I try to keep the two seperate

Ive done the casual Black Jeans and black shirt one before, felt underdressed but had a great time anyway :)
Remember wearing a full suit once as well and being accosted by some peak capped, nike vest wearing person on the goth dance floor who demanded to know why they let me in dressed like that. hmm i was wondering the same thing, so were others.

hmmm.... reminds me of an incident a few months ago.
A few friends of mine, and myself, who have all been going to slimes for ages went to celebrate the birthday of one of our number. We decided that party hats were in order... even though we all looked dressed-up ish they didn't go down well at all. I cant remember the last time i got such evils: but that was the reception we were expecting, so we found it quite amusing.

its a toughie, I used to spend hours dressing up with others, but now, as i'm the wrong side of 30, i sometimes cant be arsed, but on the other hand, i never stand a chance of looking "casual" anywhere but slimes, so its a dilema for me... However, the place is, as far as i am concerned, a social club (albeit a noisy one! yay!!) so, i should try to make more of an effort.....(sigh)

the question needs answering! i'm clad head to toe in black, but no rubber, no leather, just black tee and jeans (and big fookin' coat), am i gonna get in or not? i'm not a member (yet), but this really sounds like my scene...

I don't feel i have to drees up to go for it any more. When i first started going i'd fully dress the part, but as time has gone on i have a better time with casual clothes. Besides once Ive been dancing for a few hours I end up looking a state however I turned up.
The most casual I've been at Slimes is black army boots, black combats and a band T-shirt. This was usually on nights where I'd been to a gig beforehand, and maybe shopping before that - one way or the other, I had to dress semi-practically (or I'd just get all hot and uncomfortable very quickly). I've since tired of doing overloaded 18-hour trips round London, so I won't be doing this any more.
Anyway, since I never wear blue denim, sportswear or major labels, the above would be 'casual' for me, though band T-shirts usually indicate some kind of allegiance to the scene. I remember coming out of a Fear Factory gig once, and changing from an FF T-shirt to a VNV one on the bus to Slimes. On nights where fancy clothes aren't possible, that usually suffices.
The Most casual I've been was black jeans, black T-shirt & black trainers ... a far cry from what I usually wear!!

I went last weekend for the first time in a year or more, and I'm thinking half an half, half casual, half goth/whatever. Then again wearing all black and stuff meant I wasn't asked for membership card or anything, which I was suprised about. I thought i was gonna get asked!

dressing up is part of the fun of going to slimelight...and lets face it, it kind of feels cool and the women look great. however i have been to slimelight in casuals and i must say i was met by a few disproving looks. in fact someone actually came up to me and asked if i was new and said that jeans were a no no. frankly i say fuck em. i mean if i have to dress up in order to "fit-in" at a place like slimelight, then it kind of defeats the purpose of going there. in the end you have to just wear (or not wear) whatever you want and thats the whole point. plus its more important to actually have / make friends while you're there and to have a good time. i mean dressing up real good and posing in a corner never helped anyone fit in.

i alwasy dress in order to feel right abotu myself... if it looks good in order people's eyes or not but i sure enjoy positive comments...
on the other hand, i cannot stand people who look like they have not changed their t-shirt in within the last week and who smell it as well.
also naked tops dont go down well with me, i dont wanna look at bloke's bare chests when iam out.
my preference for blokes is shirt tie and combat trousers and boots and a sharpish looking hairdo...
all in black if possible.. so go for it guys!
most females in slimelight look very good as well though i see the people who look just a tad out of place, usually like dresse dup townies and i have seen bad bad BAD trainers in white, beige and gowd knows what colour...
BAD and WRONG!
after all, i make an effort, so can the blokes.
must i spell it out to you guys? you can pull MUCH better if you look hawt, get a female friend to advice you and go for it mister ;)

I agree that whether to dress up or not should be a personal choice. If you go in casual clothes and people give you looks, that says more about them than it says about you.
Having said that, I wouldn't feel right going out to Slimelight without dressing up, I usually enjoy feeling like I've made the effort, whether I'm going in trousers or a skirt.
Oh, and I have worn a mesh top on occasions, sorry Snowwy

i agree with snow-white in that, most of the guys at slimelight like the way the women dress. the girls make the effort and it shows cos they mostly look hot. but alot of the guys on the other hand, don't seem to make any effort what-so-ever. i think alot of the confusion lies in the fact that its not entirely clear to men what women like. i mean its very hard to generalise. in a very general way men can be said to like women to dress less, dress tight and dress clean. so long as a woman has these three things under control she will always have a sufficient number of men drooling over her. for men on the other hand its not so simple. (unless you're gay of course, in which case dress less, dress tight and dress clean seems to work fine)

I enjoy dressing up myself. the clothes the makeup the hair...the bloody lot.
What does make it harder for men is the fact that it is harder to get decent/good looking clothes. When you do find a shop that caters to mens clothing its limited and pricey.
I used to make all my clothes out of necessity. In SA there is no such thing as a clothing store for the alternate scene. everything was either homemade (not always a bad thing) or imported.
But i no longer have a sewing machine and i'll be damned if im gonna sew by hand.
I definately agree on the smelly male club goer. you almost want to throw them into the thames...they might still have a stench, but not as bad.
.....alternate casual?
I like to be amongst those that controvert...be it casual or otherwise.

While on this topic.... is there any policy within slimes for torn / ripped jeans etc? I would presume that there would be less fuss on this example, but just to be sure I'd be ok and able to pack my bags with less worries. Any advice would be great!

overhearing a conversation last night that a bouncer had with a couple of blue jeans and trainers guys, its not a problem if you got torn/ripped stuff as long as you fit vaguely into the goth/industrial description... i would advice on black if you go for jeans

Corsets are fine, nevertheless I prefer cinchers, they at least allow the top bit of a ribcage to expand as you breath in (comes in quite usefull when you want to dance rather than just pose). And it does not get soiled with that awful mixture of deodorant and sweat (unavoidable by-product of proper dancing).
I do apologize if this question does not go in this thread (just ignore it), but does anyone have any idea where in London (or Surrey) I might be able to buy army coats?
Many thanks

i normally tend to make an effort to look better than usual when going out, especially for slimes. i'll put on my best goth clothes and jewellry to feel more special. i'm not always quite so goth as when i'm at slimes, normally i just wear all black if i'm staying in the house, all black with a slightly goth hint with make-up and jewellry when i'm going out of the house, and the full think for clubs!
i love dressing up for these occasions. it makes it more exciting and it's one of the few places i can do it and still fit in. i'm outcasted enough around here just for wearing all black.

Camden is of course goth/alternative mecca. Or at least it was. It's now becoming just another haven for tourists & trendies. Meh. The only trouble with shopping in Camden is that EVERYBODY shops in Camden, so you're more than likely gonna see other people with the same items of clothing as yourself (especially if you shop in shit holes like Cyberdog :P) but hey, whatever.
Why not just wear black?

Come down once, in just whatever black you can throw together, take a look at what others are wearing, decide what you think you'd look good in and then either ask people where they got their gear from or get to Camden and look for something similar.
Oh, and I'd avoid going down the 'cyber' route if I were you.....just makes you look young....but then again, as you ARE young maybe that shouldn't matter.
If in doubt, get yourself a black leather jacket....any kind....can't go wrong with a black leather jacket as the Fonz used to say!!!

I do put effort and dress up for Slimelight but as I work long hours and sometimes even on Saturday, I just can't be asked to put lots of make-up on. My hair is so fine (meaning useless) that there is no way I can make it look glamourous. I do remember going to Slime dressed "casual": New Rocks, fishnets, very short mini skirt, skimpy black top, very little make-up and messy (but clean) hear and quite a few times this girl, who must have spent at least 2 hours doing her hair up (hairdo reminded me of an ambasador in Babylon 5), with her friends would give me looks like I did not deserve to be in there. But I enjoy dancing and I can do it whichever way i like it, she could not afford to make any sudden moves, was as stiff as artificial. We people in Slimelight are as judgemental and dismissive as anyone else. :(

Yet more evidence that female goths are issed with time-stopping devices when they join. Or else they periodically skip between here and whatever planet women are originally from, where there are 36 hours in a day and everyone owns a set of hydraulic hair straighteners.

to be honest, i can walk into H&M and get still the type of clothes i am after and i always look like me. once you decided on a style and what would be good to suit that style (and your body) then you should be able to get stuff from everywhere, though you might have to keep going back to the shops as they might not always have what youre looking for
on the other hand, you'll get decent stuff in camden and if you are careful then you wont look like everyone else, do not listen to fashion wise under developed blokes... listen to me, i spend vast amounts of time and energy on clothing ...
dunno why, i have become vain

veryTo be quite honest, I'd advise against Camden. I find it more expensive, and at the end of the day, everyone sells the same thing. In particular, if you're a poor student, the train fare and the generally hig prices isn't always worth it. Of course, the selection is usually good overall, but you have to trapse around a lot of shops and stalls.
You can pick up quality military trousers, shirts and tops for Å10-Å20 in military surplus and camping shops. Just open up your Yellow Pages (or use yell.co.uk) and look up your local army surplus place.
I also find that "Asian-owned" shops can very very cheap and can provide some excellent clothing. There are at least four such shops at the western end of Oxford Street in London (one is called Surprise Surprise. I forget the names of the others). They sell leather goods, coats, shirts, trousers, skirts, stockings and all you're likely to need when you're starting off.
I don't want to echo everyone else, but Ebay is also good. Just don't expect to go online and find everyone selling Transmuters for Å10/pair or full-lengths leather coats for Å50. You will see good deals, but you have to be patient and set up some searches to look for the bargains. This is a long-term solution and the prices I just mentioned have actually happened (I have the goods and receipts to prove it). Don't worry if you miss that cheap black top that you liked... There will be another one at the same sort of price in a week or two.
The best of British luck!
