View Full Version : Upstairs Music Policy....

dj-judas

....there isn't one.

That's just it. Upstairs at Slimelight is NOT a noise only floor.
It just happens that at his point in time the predominant music played on that floor is IDM/powernoise/hard industrial.
This does not mean that ONLY this music should be played there.

In fact, if there was to be any definition at all for the whole of Slimelight it would be that it's an 'alternative music club'.
This means that a variety of music will get played on any of the floors.

This means that SOMETIMES there will be music played that SOME people don't like.

It's unfortunate that there seems to always be a vocal MINORITY who frequently complain when anything other than what they like gets played. And yes, we know who you are and we ARE watching you.

Hehe, I'm still waiting for the flames from last weekend. Was in a bad mood, so I played everything from techno to drum'n'bassy noise to 90's cheese (20 Fingers - Short Dick Man) and even my Scissor Sisters remix.

Hohoho :)

Just when you thought this age old type thread had finally died down......

Thankgod I didn't go last weekend and i came so so close to. That would really of made my night having to listen to Scissor sisters and the like, but then again:

"In fact, if there was to be any definition at all for the whole of Slimelight it would be that it's an 'alternative music club'.
This means that a variety of music will get played on any of the floors."

..we should just expect it and accept it if we do hear it. By a couple of the posts already the people didn't accept and just left the floor.
So by having an open music policy you also get an open floor policy.....makes sense.

Slimelight = ALTERNATIVE music.

Me too! There's a vocal minority who keep pushing for too much concentration of music to suit their own narrow tastes, as if that's what most people want. Without the variety, Slimelight would be a lot less than it is.

It goes through cycles on any given Saturday. Just so happens the floor was packed at the time! But yes, on average it's less populated than, say, 2 years ago

Firstly, it was the special Untermensch remix (hard pounding beats).
Secondly, I played for over 3 hours, and most of that was my usual relentless noise. Just so happens that due to there not being many people upstairs at first, I had to woo the crowd onto the floor. When I'm playing the crowd, I don't mind pissing off a few short-sighted people in order to get the party started.

Mr Judas, I think you should round up yourself, Uwe (or gassmann as he's better known) and Kelly. Some of the finest moments came from the nights when the three of you were behind the decks.

And it has to be said that this years dj's (and the most of last years for that matter) at infest looks rather dismal. Cream of the scene? I think that cream has been out of the fridge too long. After the standards set at infest '03 - you know who you are - its been quite dull since!
Is there any reason why Judas, Uwe, Kelly and Untermensch aren't playing?

Or maybe we're all just getting too old for this?

Kelly's moved back to South Africa (although he plans to be making frequent visits).
Uwe has moved with his fiancé to Surrey and is (justifiably) worried about his liver - drinking and DJing for almost 18 years is actually bad for your body!
We're still waiting for Andy to come back and do his thing.
I don't take this whole DJ thing seriously enough to try to play anywhere else. For me, it's something I enjoy doing on a Saturday night, and it's a cathartic way of taking out my frustrations.

Considering theres only about 5-15 regular forum posters, what do you expect. ALso it's never been about the noise either, it's been about the House etc crap that gets played bringing the undesirables to the club, but this has been discussed and argued to death, so the sooner these posts stop the better. But DJs will still be slagged off or thanked for playing good or crap music.

Well I wouldn't say its never been about the noise, and there'd have to be a pretty high proportion of 'house etc crap' played to make undesirables come in and stay through the non-'crap' bits IMHO. Thanks for the complement, and honestly, I could agree with you. Slimelight needs a balance of DJ styles on all of the floors, otherwise it will just get stale and boring. I always saw myself in that role and my sets vary according to whoever I'm spinning with.

And it has to be said that this years dj's (and the most of last years for that matter) at infest looks rather dismal. >snip< After the standards set at infest '03 - you know who you are - its been quite dull since!

Well, as far as I know the lineup isn't complete yet. I have a feeling I may be making an appearance ;) - also, if you have feedback of this kind then you should let the InFest organisers know your opinion. They are open minded enough to listen.

As for re-appearing at Slimelight....

...I will in fact be returning on the 16th July for a session and I do believe that Uwe may also be persauded to join me.
And I can guarantee that I will NOT be playing 2 hours of noize! I will be mixing up a selection of Slimelight classics from the mid 90's onward as well as a bunch of new tunes. So get the old regulars rounded up for a party :D !!

Or maybe we're all just getting too old for this?

Matt from Implant is also a DJ who got a lot of good moments.. i got fed up with too much techno lately... nothing to do with my alled narrow mind or short sightedness.. after all i am the person who knows most downstairs music enough tosing along to it. i have been to techno, hard dance and whatsits events... noise is simply deeper and has got more industrial undertones than techno...

also i would love to hear more neofolk which i frequently get via DJ Loki if i manage to turn up early .. sometimes i catch a bit of poinding industrial as well .. i still think musically industrial and noise belong together on the top floor but thats my normal mortal understadning of the whole thing and obviously putting cds in machines makes one much more qualified to comment on the subject.

i feel i get bored with it too now but i keep saying it, its really surprising how people who only visit slimelight for a couple of hours every month then seem to know exactly what was playing all night... very well...

we need more industrial clubs in london.

btw we had really great nights lately, so i wont knock it too much... but please can you cut the amount of techno before slimelight upstairs becomes the fabric?

I'm talking about a varied and eclectic selection of tunes, which will depend on the balance of the night, the audience and mood of the night, amongst other factors. Therefore it may or may not include some 'futurepop' since that was for several years the mainstay of the 'upstairs' music.

Whether it is in your own opion 'crap' or not is just that, your own opinion. :p - there are many who enjoy it.

I get really wound up by people who declare any music that they don't like as 'crap'.
It's simply that you don't like it and either have no better means of verbally communicating your opinion on the relevant merits of the music in question, or you simply can't be bothered.

Either is lamentable.

Hmmm...Well, if you really must know I've already explained in extensive detail as to why I dislike Ibiza-Goth/Euro-Goth as I call it (that's "Futurepop" to all you hands in the air types ;)) so rather than have it become tedium (much like these discussions have) I prefer not to go into detail every single time.

But...seeing as you asked...

All I need to say is when Futurepop sounds like something you could hear on the Eurovision song contest I think that fairly deserves to be called CRAP
I'm sorry, but it's true.

And what you need to bear in mind is that I have a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide selection of music as I'm a firm believer in listening to anything that I like, so I'm not pigeon-holed into any one or two genres.
Pehaps it would surprise you when I say that I never used to mind some of the stuff like Apop, Covenant etc etc when it was a bit dark, it was something to break up the evening and wasn't unpleasant on the ears...but now it's gone all airy-fairy and to be honest I find it comical. It's almost like they're just playing up for the dancefloors...oh wait, you mean they are?

You may also want to note that despite the fact that I love noize, I can appreciate that some people think it's crap I mean "how can you listen to that stuff?" ;) Doesn't make their opinion any less valid tho does it?

I never mentioned anything about 'narrow minded one genre liking idiots'.
My irritation lies with the number of people who declare anything not to their taste as 'crap' without recourse to further explaination.

And don't get me wrong, I LIKE noize. But I'm firmly of the belief that Slimelight needs a varied balance or music on any of its floors otherwise it simply becomes dull and stagnant.

....there isn't one.

And yes, we know who you are and we ARE watching you.

okay watch me but as long as you play HARD industrial and noise and HARD/TERROR ebm we will not have a problem or any objection

the trouble arrises when you think that we have to like nambipambi softish futurepoop of the apoptygma style

look, its not that we dont know the tracks, we have been goths, elektro freaks at some point but live has moved on and if youre too "good" or silly to notice that then you will hear about it, as much as you will hear the gratitude and thanks of people who have been very happy with your performance, if you got it right.

i like to think that we are harsh but fair... just like the music we like... "us" being the gits on the top....

We've been here before (MANY times), but the vocal minority on here don't neccessarily reflect the views of everyone on the top floor. It's pretty obvious when things are wrong for the night/floor, when the floor clears - DJs all get it wrong sometimes, you're only human after all.

I'm generally happy with the mix of music we get. Of course there are some tracks I'm not so keen on, but you can't please all of the people all of the time and I accept that I'll sometimes have to go for a wander to the other floor(s), the bar or something.

Noise all of the time would get pretty dull.

yes what they said.. also this lil noise bitch can actually sing along with most songs played downstairs and its this simple thing that makes it so boring to her... really, i mean terror ebm, industrial and noise now that would go down well with me.

speaking of downstairs... ibiza goth seems to be playing a lot downstairs, so why bother with it upstairs? also why play townie music upstairs, if the fabric is only about 15 minutes walk from slimelight?
I absolutly agree you got too many ibiza clubs in the centre of London keep a piece of the world for noise

Keep it hard but please please please play something with a rhythm or a beat cos five minutes of white noize can really kill a dancefloor

hmm.... be careful. a lot of new "hard" ebm is just as derivative and lame as "weiber electro"

i once went to a three floor special at slimelight. they were playing that music on all three floors. simultaneously.

also why play townie music upstairs, if the fabric is only about 15 minutes walk from slimelight?

it's interesting you should choose fabric as an example of a "townie" club, i think it is a very bad one. i think you will find that although there are a lot of fashionable (as in the non-cyberdog wearing varaity of fashionable :P )people going there, the management is commited to a "credible" music policy and, moreover, _certain_ drum n bass residencies on friday rotation i'm SURE play harder music than your average slime night.............

of course since slimelight is probably the only club you in london you have been to (ok so i've seen you once or twice at sick n twisted) it's easy to make these kind of uninformed throwaway statements......

actually i know a "goth" type who goes to slimelight and now and again goes to fabric too. so don't belive the hype. this is just pure "inverted" snobbery and there's really no excuse for it.
