View Full Version : The Music was absolute garbage this weekend

Yep.
Actually, the first New Wave-esque set was really good, unfortunately it then descended into metal. Though they did play Madonna at one point :D

I was a bit narked to find only the goth floor open at the start of the night, actually liked the music in there at the start of the night (Francesca?), but it was hardly good for a warm up (and it WAS pretty cold!) Stuff improved, later on though. Once all the floors are open there's hardly room for boredom any more.

Yes, the first set was Francesca's... I was told the others floors had been closed because there was a metal gig still going on... so they'd be opening them after the gig at around 23-23.30.
Which brings me to the fact there were some idiots on the middle floor when they had just opened it standing on the wooden platform between the cages which I think they got in after the gig...
I don't know if anyone noticed them, but they were laughing at people, mocking at guys who walked past them behind their backs - one of them was even sitting on the floor taking "upskirt" pics of women who happened to be nearby and reveling in his own "accomplishment".
I told Oz about them, and just while I was at it outside the middle floor on the stairs next to the cinema, they came out and said they were leaving... Oz took over, I left, and I don't know what happened to them afterwards (because some of the group they were with stayed on the middle floor for a while).
This cam. guy, along with another guy sporting some blue jeans and a black leather jacket who was with him, had already been at Slimes several weeks ago behaving like twats back then too.
It'd be nice if they didn't let them in a third time.
As for the music, well, can't really say. I got blind drunk and ended up passing out all over the place. Including an upper floor's toilet booth and the sitting platform next to the dancefloor (which was particularly embarrassing). I don't remember much of the time I was awake let alone what music was played in any floor... Did they actually play anything at all? :p
I guess that's what happens when you are like 'WTF? Why isn't the alcohol kicking in?' ***drinks more*** 'Still nothing? Damn!' ***gimme moar!!!!*** .................. 'Hmm here comes the effect ... oh fuck...'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Simon played Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl on the middle floor this weekend. Even if it was a remix, it was a bad one. If it was a joke, it was a bad one.
I hope I am not the only one who does not want this in Slimelight. It's not Fabric (though you'd be forgiven for thinking that sometimes...) and it's not a disco. Stop ruining the club's name please, and play some proper music.

Blimey! Well, if that really was played, then fair point. But, noobie, I'm curious: what would tickle your fancy, tune-wise?

Well. I like my EBM and industrial like anyone else, but a nice injection of dark electro wouldn't go amiss - yelworC, Object, Last Influence of Brain etc. I'm not keen on the more club-oriented techno-sounding 'EBM' that normally gets played, though I understand the crowds must be pleased (I don't discount 'terror electro' completely either, because - irrespective of whatever dubious name it goes by now - it has good roots and there are certainly some out there who are able to produce that kind of music with intelligence and skill). The day I hear Mentallo & The Fixer in Slimelight will make me a happy boy.
What I really worry about, though, is the great departure from what the club used to play only a few years ago. It's lazy and it's certainly making the place less viable as an 'alternative' to any of the dozens of dance clubs in the city. In my opinion, this is predominantly why the club is currently enjoying such poor business.

Lol it was the Aesthetic Perfection Remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-q-wGMuga8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-q-wGMuga8)
It’s a shame that the Lady Gaga remix by the same artist is not suitable for play in Slimelight (IMHO) because I would love an excuse to bounce around to one of my musical guilty pleasures. Aesthetic Perfection on the other hand are one of the most popular artists played in Slime.
I suspect what you took offence to was the fact that this song has been in the charts and therefore you associate it with mainstream culture. Other recently charted songs have also been played on the middle floor of Slime, namely Papillion by Editors and Remedy by Little Boots. You may not have recognised these songs and therefore did not complain about them. Maybe if Gaga hadn’t become a mega-success we would be dancing to Bad Romance every Saturday...
If Slime DJs were banned from playing anything which had been in the UK Top 40, most of the older material on the Goth Floor playlist would have to be dropped (Sisters, The Mission, Cure, Siouxie, Depeche Mode etc). If it was to include the German charts even more music would have to be “banned” from Slime.
If a song is good and it fits Slime then I will play it. I am going to be pushing Hurts on the Goth Floor over the next few months. They are currently on posters all over the place and will be in the top 40 on Sunday, however I think they are good enough to be included in my playlists and I think others will like them too.
I suspect Simon was trying to inject a bit of fun into his set last Saturday, but not everybody got the joke...

Plus, every time I have been to an industrial / EBM club in the last few years has played the Zombie Nation song (although I can't remember who remixed it...), that got to number 2 in the UK charts and its a fantastic song, so you can't just exclude everything thats ever been in the charts!

Yeah, I was told this was the case. I can't say I'm a fan of AP, but that isn't really the point. It was a bad remix, to the point where it could easily have been the original song with added bass. That song definitely doesn't suit Slimelight.

Sorry miss, but you suspect incorrectly ;) I don't care how much success a song gets, mainstream or otherwise. The material played in the club just needs to be suitable for the kind of place it is (and preferably of a high standard). Katy Perry doesn't fit the bill.
You are right to say that I would not have recognised those songs you mentioned. However, if they don't sound right for the club, you can be assured that I will leave whatever floor they are being played on.
If a song is good and it fits Slime then I will play it.
That's what I want to hear. Two good criteria. None of this 'must never have been in the UK Top 40' nonsense - like I said, I don't care; a particular track could have been Number 1 for ten weeks running, but so long as it meets those requirements, fair enough.
I suspect Simon was trying to inject a bit of fun into his set last Saturday, but not everybody got the joke...
Judging by the space on the dancefloor at the time, next to nobody got it. It was an embarrassing moment for all involved.
Plus, every time I have been to an industrial / EBM club in the last few years has played the Zombie Nation song (although I can't remember who remixed it...), that got to number 2 in the UK charts and its a fantastic song, so you can't just exclude everything thats ever been in the charts!
That's the Grendel remake I think. I have no problem with that whatsoever. I liked the original song when it was released and I think Grendel's version is fun and well-made. Where did you both get this idea that I hate the UK charts?
Anyway, I know this is a tricky issue; no one person can decide what music is right or wrong for a club to play. I'm just asking for a little common sense to be used here. In my opinion, there's a real risk of alienating the people who have supported - and continue to support - Slimelight, by playing music you could hear almost anywhere else.

M0rbid: I think that if there's a song you don't like, and that you think cleared the dancefloor, I can't see the problem in expressing how you feel.
Fenbane: Do you actually care about Slimelight's loyal customers when they show an intelligent critical interest in the music?

Just listened to the track and it's quite a good remix, bit commercial, but IMHO, what kills it completely as a Slimelight track, is the vocals.

Well this shows if you cannot experiment sometimes........... how do you know....
I like the song and as for your opinion that`s your right too express
If you expect it too change my mind, it will not.............
But it bombed so will not be played by me again..........the same song was played at Summer Darkness by one of the best EBM DJ`s in Europe and went down a storm.........

Well, if the europeans like it then we should all put aside our personal tastes and dance like drunken monkeys to it. Slimelight could probably just change it's name to Berghain. It would lead to a lot less confusion.

I have learnt from experience that a track which bombs one week, can be a success another week. I cleared the dancefloor to Hurts - Better Than Love, week before last. Last week it did pretty well. I think this was due to where I placed it in the set and the fact it has been played before means it was a little more familiar to the punters. Furthermore the cross section of punters in Slime can change from one week to the next due to groups making trips to Slime from outside London. I can never predict what the crowd is going to be like one week to the next, which makes the job more interesting I suppose!

A DJ who experiments is always better than one who sticks to the same decade-old setlist week in, week out. Please keep on trying new things. Just use your brain and think about it...

Perfect!
Is 'one of the best EBM DJs in Europe' so lauded because they possess some genuine technical skill on the decks, or because they can be relied upon to turn the floor into a frenzied mass of glazen-eyed 14 year olds with a tepid stream of club bangers? People only seem to care about the latter as far as I can tell.

I do use my brain, so there is nothing wrong there...........I will carry on experimenting...thanks
The DJ in Europe was just a reference so Alexander can calm down, if it was not for the European`s most of this scene would be dead......
Some people actually liked it by what I am told on FB so not a total fail...
It happened .......... move on.........

The only way that would happen at Slimelight is if you invented a time machine and went back to 1994.

Yeah! If it wasn't for the europeans we'd still be dancing to Siouxsie and the Sisters Of Mercy!

Missed ya buddy ^_^
Anyway, pointless conversation is pointless. Dj's have to able to experiment otherwise we'd still be playing Pigface and Murder Inc every weekend. Some things work, some things don't. Feedback is appreciated...
However... Posting in a thread called "The Music was absolute garbage this weekend" based on not liking one track is wrong. Start a new thread for this sort of thing plox.

Alexander I dont understand why you attend Slimelight, do you genuinely attend so it gives you something to write about on the forum?
And Simon keep experimenting, its that uniqueness that gives Slimelight the edge over its competitors.

Yeah. That real edge Slimelight has now. Dwindling numbers and growing money problems week after week. I can hear those competitors quaking in their boots.
I absolutely love the club. The venue, the crowd, the atmosphere - it's inimitable. There are some great DJs who obviously have a passion for what they do and who they're doing it for. I want the place to keep going forever. But it doesn't encourage me to see people brushing these issues off like it's all fine. One day Slimelight might have to stop, because it's just not bringing in enough people each Saturday to sustain itself alone, and nobody's willing to consider that the music policy might actually be a significant contributing factor? I know it was just one track that I mentioned originally, but might that not be indicative of a greater concern?
Or move on, ignore it, whatever.

Basically, yes.
The people, the music, the booze, running off with Ozzy's hat... all is secondary compared with posting on this forum.
The aim is to make more posts than Flux and then I win the game and can retire.

Morbid I agree with you, I love the club, the atmosphere, the staff, the venue, the memories it provides me with and I would hate to see Slimelight one day have too close because of money issues due to dwindling numbers.
It was quite a few years back when queuing was inevitable and i would love to see a return to those days, however i think that wont happen as partly a combination of a few things, the first one being the fact we are all getting older and not much in the way of youngsters coming through with the same interest ( I see them all the time at Drum and Bass, Techno and Dubstep nights and conventional alternative nights, but rarely see them at Gothic or Industrial Clubs, the same can be said for Maschinenfest as this is my 6th year and i only expect to see more of the same old people :) ) and not everyone comes out anywhere near as much as they used too, only us the failure to launch generation :) .
And partly because there is so much competition across all styles of music, across all parts of London whereas a few years back anyone competing with Slimelight on a Saturday night in this field of music would of been throwing their money away.
And alexander I apologise I was just baiting you, you know i enjoy that and always have and for years i have been rattling your chain.
Stealing Ozzies hat is "the awesome" and now we all just lost the game because of your last post but whether that means Flux wins by default, I just dont know.
