Hi guys and gals! Just signed up today, and the Slimelight reviews have all in all been ecstatic. However I do have a couple of questions. One, can a 16 year old get in without ID (following the dress code of course), and have you any tips for breaking the ice with the regulars (of which I hope a couple of you out there are!)?

Thanks a lot!!

I've seen people that I believed to be younger than that in Slimelight.

Don't be a twat. Don't pretend you know it all. Don't be afraid to say it's your first time in Slimelight. I speak to a lot of new people all the time, some of them don't have a fucking clue what they're talking about and pretend they do. Putting on a persona; these people really irritate me no end and I will generally avoid them like the plague for a few years (if they last that long). I prefer chatting to the newcomers that are not afraid to admit it and have no pretentions.

Don't pretend to be really hard, don't pretend to be a vampire, don't pretend that you used to DJ at the Batcave, etc etc. Personally speaking, I find it very easy to spot when somebody's talking out of their arse, it doesn't impress me, and I end up just wanting to beat them around the head with the nearest blunt instrument that comes to hand.

Just be yourself and you'll get on fine. Genuine people are so much more interesting.

No.
A sixteen year old could get in with fake ID that proved they were eighteen!!!
OR
A sixteen year old could be honest, declare their true age on the door (with accompanying ID to prove it, in case they don't look that old) and agree not to approach the bar, or consume alcohol on the premises.....then we'll see:)

Magif

The question is...Does "Then we'll see" validate the risk of being turned away at the door and waisting the cash spent in getting there? :?:

I for one would love to present my almighty presence at the great slime. But alas i am staying home due to a broken shoulder. *grumble* :x

But hopefully i will be able to join in the party soon.

This is looking bleaker and bleaker... I can prove I'm 16 with my passport but would the person at the door believe my "I won't go near the bar"? Last thing I need is to get turfed out, as Magif said... Maybe it depends on whose on the door... *Wonders where to get fake ID* :P

EdIT: Magif, good luck with your shoulder, get better soon!

*raises an eyebrow at Fad's good-cop routine*

The whole thing about going near the bar, i think, is an aspect of Pub law.
If you're 16 or 17 the law as i know it in the UK you can be served ina public bar(beer or cider only) to accompany a proper plated meal. You are however not allowed to sit/stand at the bar except when ordering food.
Confusingly many places also have a licence which allows under-16s to enter, though they technically have to remain in a special designated area and aren't allowed in/at the bar under any circumstances.

However, I don't believe Slimelight is categorised as a public bar. There are no nightclubs in the UK (as of yet) that can legally admit under-18s in their own right, those that do can't also serve alcohol and thus aren't nightclubs.
As far as i know, the club's insurance policy won't cover anyone who isn't legally entitled to be there.

Therefore there is no legal way a young person under 18 could come in.

*malevolent-cop smile*

However if you get served in most pubs and you look the part then you'll probably have no problem decieving the door/bar staff as long as you lie gratuitously if questioned.
I think this might be the best way to resolve your difficulty, as the law states that there is a defence for the proprieter if they did not have any reason to suspect that someone is below the required legal age.

The clubs I used to go to when I was sixteen knew I was underaged but didn't mind too much, they were quite happy to let sixteen year olds on if they eithier look older than they are or have some kind of fake id, so as to cover themselves, and they behaved themselves et cetera of course.

So it probably rests on how old you look I suppose...

From what I remember from my high-school teachings and the drummings of my pub/club-owning family, the UK law runs like this:

Any Age: Allowed One Unit of Alcohol with a meal. You cannot order this from the bar, although someone else may order it from the abr for you. It's preferred if this is ordered through a waiter etc...
14+: You can now enter pubs on your own. Do not approach the bar. Do not pass go. Do not collect Ł200. Landlords still have the right to turf you out.
18+: Congratulations. You can buy drinks. Now realise how nasty alochol is and wish you hadn't wasted all that time building up to it.

However, I don't believe Slimelight is categorised as a public bar. There are no nightclubs in the UK (as of yet) that can legally admit under-18s in their own right, those that do can't also serve alcohol and thus aren't nightclubs.

Mostly true. My local club, The Waterfront has regular 14+ nights whenever live bands are playing. Alcohol is then either served on an "Only if you've got ID no matter what you look like" basis, or not at all. On our usual nights though, its all 18+, and drink flows freely from cherubs on the walls. Or not.

One other piece of advice I'll let through, as chauvinistic as it might sound, is that any female under the age of 18 who wants to go, should grab an older guys arm to walk in on. Don't ask me why, but it works.

Hmm, not sure on that one. You see i'm an expert with regards to anything i've ever even had a passing interest in. :P

As far as i'm aware it's all about to change in 2005 though, since the new licencing act becomes applicable.

Your best bet is still, be tall, have facial hair and lie through your teeth.

bugger, not pretend to be hard? bugger bugger bugger, how about pretend to be a scary and evil bitch?

or a lesbean? dancing "sexily at each other"?

i must say, i generally dont speak with people who:

* pretend they are lezzers, cos youre spotted to be a fake if youre not.
* chavs dressed up
* undercover people with bad shoes, though they often choose to speak to me cos aparently according to them, i could only last as long as i do dancingly if i am on pills (twats!)try moving your glowsticks as fast as i do on pills.. tried it and failed!
* blokes who think they have to make me smile... while i laugh inside, my outside will still frown at you well after we all gone home!
* people who obviously demand bad music, like chavy ibiza trance and metal
* smelly people,.... i mean whats worng with your showers?
* needlessly ugly blokes - make a bloody effort, it takes me about 1.5 hours to get ready if i want to get the eyeliner just right and including ironing my clothes, so why can't you get your back sides into some nice gear?
* people who scream, whistle, yell or sing, so you can hear it over the music
* people who go to slimelight in order to take the piss out of the regulars (like a couple of total twats last time i went, could have killed them, only thing is, it will land me in prison)
* blokes who's sole purpose in slimelight is to eye up the girl's various half exposed bits... now i know the girls wear it,s o they will be looked at but some of you penis bearers are a tad too obvious and a tad too much in yer face, stop it, insensitive gits!
