Here is what is REALLY happening this weekend. The Cinema Strange gig will knock the socks off Black Celebration. If you want a gig where Goths who don't wave glowsticks, don't buy their image on Camden High Street and don't have 'eclectic, I like everything for the sake of openmindedness, my livejournal..., music tastes' then the following two events are for you.

Dead Rockstarzz. A Pity For Monsters Gig and Club night.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The penultimate Pity For Monsters promotion of 2004 heralds the countdown to Cinema Strange at The Spitz on the 23rd. Join Devilish Presley and their celebrity friends as they party into the night. A truly unique bill for London featuring debut U.K performances with a European slant. Every 7th song played will be by genuine Dead Rockstarzz...like Ian Curtis, Rozz Williams, Jim Morrison etc etc so dig up those requests and ask Nik or Psyche to play a DR for you.

And of course, the big one....

Cinema Strange-Devilish Presley-Leisur Hive
Sat, 23rd Oct 04
Location: Spitalfields (London)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buried by Monsters are pround to present (as part of "The Unholy Trinity" Deathrock/Goth weekend) Cinema Strange live! The Debut (and exclusive)show of this unique and highly acclaimed US Deathrock act! Inspired by the likes of Sex Gang Children and the Virgin Prunes (yet still unique and entertaining!) Playing with those cheeky East Enders, "Devilish Presley" and those London-based Post Punkers, "Leisur Hive". A show *not* to be missed!
The Spitz 109 COMMERCIAL ST. OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET. LONDON. E1 6BG This show is for those discerning people who appriciate the energy, theatricality and excitement of a genuine Deathrock gig! Cinema Strange have wooed audiences all over the world with their theatrical and atmospheric shows. No two shows are the same! This, their UK debut promises to be a "special" event. Miss it = miss out! http://www.cinema-strange.de Devilish Presley are *the* hardest working band playing on the UK Goth scene today. Be prepared for a rockin' time and some hot guitar licks from the Navarro strings (with some sultry bass manipulation from Ms Vixen!) Hell yeah! http://www.devilishpresley.com Leisur Hive will be hypnotising the audience with their own take on Post Punk style meanderings. Be prepared for a genuinely dramatic performance (Ian Curtis-style) from frontman Dan, with atmospheric violin and white-out guitars from Maria. http://www.leisur-hive.co.uk Spitz Info & Box office 020 7392 9032 http://www.spitz.co.uk Info: Cavey Nik on 07981 234335 Tickets = Ł10 advance/Ł12 on the door
[ http://www.dancefloorpoison.com ]

Cinema Strange do not promote themselves under the labels which they are associated with and could possibly be the first (goth/dark scene) band since the 80's to be recognised by people and the music industry outside of ressurection records, livejournal and Slimelight. I know a lot of people who are going and having pasted all this info from netgoth, none of my friends are on the list, however the attendance list is longer than that of Black Celebration.

I won't be suprised if I see people converting from Cyberdog crap, to home made outfits and big ripped up hair by the end of the year.

oh look, you haven't even got the brain to start a new topic. i think the event you mention might be interesting for some but only if you're into that type of music. whereas black celebrations has a lot to offer for different people.

Devilish Presley is a band i have seen but i personally would not spend money on seeing them again specifically as i do not take to their music.

i dont buy clothes in camden generally, i still do not own any cyberdog gear and i have no plastic extensions in my hair... sorry mate and as for open mindedness it does't extend to your idea of good music..

I didn't state that I liked any bands on the bill and you still do not know just what my tatse in music is and I didn't start my own topic because I don't need to because A: Most of the goth crowd do not use these forums and B: I get more pleasure out of changing the topic of a 'plastic' post. And it was also unfair to accuse most of the 'plastic' crowd of buying their clothes in Cyberdog, when half of the people up there (top floor slimes) are usually trendys, so next time I will do the combination of 'Gap/Cyberdog/Black Rose'.

and believe me, some of the plastic crowd are so off their face, they do the same dance to anything all night at Slimelight including bands like Alien Sex Fiend and Cinema Strange and I'm sure thats a crime that you yourself cannot even deny committing.

ah there he wank.. errr goes again...

same dance:

hrmmm well i am the same person and i have a certain style.. off my face? yes sometimes but i do vary my dance as it suits but you wouldn't find me two stepping cos there is alien sex fiend playing.. besides, i am usually upstairs anyway, which is not the place where you would hear alien sex fiend i guess. doing the same dance all night, every night might be boring to you (go on fred astair, entertain us then!) but its hardly a crime, so look away if its not your thing!

GAP clothes... i dunno if they sell something i like, though i think i havent got anything by GAP either... Black Rose now now, youre talking evil tradgoth gear now, the likes you find more readily at events that you advertise and music you hail as the only truely good stuff.... so bugger off!

as for trendy:

i think they should enforce the dress code, i am sick of townies who are there just in order to take the piss, i often end up in a kerfuffel with them as they piss me off so much...

plastic crowd:

point out somebody who is not made from flesh and blood when youre next at slimelight. i think you are pathologically insane or you have a strong (gothic) deathwish as i could think that if you would say that to some people's face, you would have to purchase a new set of teeth.

Or is that that you are trying to convert those who may be easily swayed from Cyberdog clothing into ripped fishnets and big hair by the end of the year and thought you'd ride on the back of a more popular event to do so knowing that these people would not read a Cinema Strange topic? Why get more pleasure in changing a "plastic" post anyway......you should get out more ;)

The Black Rose has nothing to do with trad goth and is completely against the aesthetic. Black Rose sells imitation outfits and fancy dress costumes. Anyone who calls themself a Goth should look a bit harder to find their clothes. The New Rock/baggy trouser covered in tacky buckles and chains is a middle/top floor fashion at Slimes and is usually favoured by those converting from 'I'm a Goth and listen to Slipknot & Korn to I'm Industrial and listen to VNV Nation and (insert fancy name for the lower common denominator music at Slimes).

Me and all my friends use the term 'plastic crowd'. 'plastic culture', 'fake music', 'dance music' in reference to the lowest common denominator at Slimelight. We call Apop 'House music', people with glowsticks 'ravers' and people gothed up with glowsticks as 'peasants'. In fact I have several of these creatures approach me, saying how cool I look, do I have livejournal, issuing a false hug, pretending to know me, trying to talk to me when we have nothing in common. I have no problems with expressing my opinion to these people as they do lack social skills and think they can approach anyone with the same old bullshit.

At last the rock n' roll spirit of goth is fighting back! Back to the days of fantastic musicians, writers, poets, clothes designers. The one thing that your bollocksy noise music does not have is people like Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, Siouxsie Sioux, Diamanda Galas etc. People whose audience does not consist soley of members of a club or a scene. Jim Thirwel and Blixa Bargel are from that old school creative mentality as well and did some very unique collaborations. Don't confuse your glowstick waving nonsense and simplistic noise rubbish with powerful and amazing music.

And one more thing, the make-up at Slimelight is appalling. This has not always been the case.

We call Apop 'House music', people with glowsticks 'ravers' and people gothed up with glowsticks as 'peasants'.

I think you'll find that most of us are not that dissimilar in that respect.

The one thing that your bollocksy noise music....bla bla rant rant

You see I would not dismiss some as bollocksy out of hand without knowing about it.I'm not a fan of deathrock stuff but don't have to go round simissing it as bollocksy as I'm sure it has it's merits to some people (including some of my friends).People who go round dismissing other genres of music but knowing sweet FA about them are normally pretty insecure in themselves.

does not have is people like Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, Siouxsie Sioux, Diamanda Galas Jim Thirwel and Blixa Bargel

All very good artists some of whom I have had the pleasure of seeing live and a couple I plan to.

thank fucking god!!!! but then again your trad shite hasnt got bands like Winterkalte or MS Gentur or Monolith... just to pick a couple randomly

and so fucking what? classical music hasnt got either of those and neither has jazz and that is lacking Bach and Schubert and Verdi

People whose audience does not consist soley of members of a club or a scene.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL IDIOT!!! the fucking goth scene is one big incestous bitch club as one can see in your reaction... go and play with your crimped hair goth boy and contemplate suicide

Tenebrae is already up and running (though now on a wednesday) and has never had a problem filling up with people and is a more traditional european goth club. Then there's B-Movie that managed to sell out last new years and managed to have people queing outside for hours several months in a row such was the excitement surrounding the club. The club differs from other goth nights because it plays some punk, rockabilly, glam and other stuff and has a nostalgic feel to it. Dead & Buried plays deathrock, mostly american gothic, lots of new bands, showcasing new acts, a more dressed up crowd. And there's the pity ofr monsters gig nights. So snowwy there is no need for me to set up my own night.

And then there is Slimelight monopolising the Saturday night. The club which is easy to reach from most parts of London, that is known by everyone and was part of the culture up until 1999 when they pretty much killed the scene. Slimelight do not allow their DJ's to do other nights without their permission or to advertise themselves with the Slimelight name. Slimelight also go out of their way to kill the competition. I have to say that Slimes hasn't had anything other than generic competition (bit of everything on the main floor, techno on the other). Don't be suprised if a new Goth night opens, is successful and is in East London (Brick Lane, Shoreditch-Kingsland area and don't be suprised if Slimelight start ressurecting their trad floors and free entry for members to conincide.

illuminated, some of the things you've been saying on this forum are a complete joke. its "gothier than thou" people like you that give the whole culture of gothism a bad name amongst other subcultures. you really have enforced the old complainy, depressing, bitchy stereotype of "the goth". i was interested in goth culture from a reasonably young age, and yeah i was into the little metal bands and so on, but then i got into heavier metal, goth metal, death metal. i went through all of that to come out as being a current member of the so called "plastic crowd". nothings stopping me going back to my goth interests, but currently im into this scene. i wear cyberdog clothes and wear hair extensions, often plastic based ones too!! so shoot me now!?

let me ask you this. would you be ranting in the same way about this if you got your way and everyone converted to being goth? i doubt it, you'd be complaining that you got there first, that you were into this and that and were slitting your wrists while your fellow "goths" were being concieved!! what the f*** is wrong with a little variation in cultures? why do you have to bitch? COS YOUR A GOTH I SUPPOSE AND THATS WHAT GOTHS DO!? only thing is, they dont, just the odd one or two like you that fukk it up for the rest! everyones so damn opinionated, fact is, what your arguing about doesnt have a place in this conversation. no ones interested in getting bitched at, so go back to your bedroom and continue comfort rocking! :P (not that iv got anything against goths or anything  )

im sure you'v got plenty of things to rant back at me about, so go ahead if you want, but i cant guaruntee i'll care.

Yeah it's called evolving music tastes and moving with the times. You think my parents are still on about all the groups of their time?...no they appreciate their roots but listen to current music now. People move on.
I used to love electronic music when I was very young since I did all the disco dancing lessons etc.
I started listening to different music (that thing called expanding your horizons) like early 90s punk revival and various Metal bands. I've been in London 2-3 years now and the underground electronic scene has been opened up to me (didn't have it back home) so it's kind of taken me back to the roots of my younger electronic days but obviously with an up-to-date vibe...now what's wrong with a bit of variety and change?!
I appreciate that you like your 'good old days' stuff but there's others out there that like other things. It's so narrow-minded and pretentious to consider your views correct and valid. As for your labels...good for you...(note sarcasm)

Oh boo hoo hoo! So Slimes is popular. How can that justify saying that it monopolises Saturday nights? Had a failed club, did we?

How can it be justified in stateing that Slimes "pretty much killed the scene"? "Scenes" adapt and evolve, otherwise they stagnate and die. To say the goth genre has to involve just one type of music is like saying that rock has to have only one type of music...it's a ridiculous statement because people bring in different, equally viable, influences and the music develops in to sub-genres...it's a fact of life. Get over it!

as long as it's not Silence is Sexy I really don't mind!

I bet it'll be a Flag staple like Machanical Cabaret or Deathboy or someone.

Personally I don't like the venue much, it's so sparky, light and a weird shape. And is it me or do they always have sound problems in there?!

There are very few Lonodn venues that I can't fault on sound.Best I have been to are the Astoria,Forum,Ocean and the best of all being Scala.

Saying that when BC was at the Astoria a couple of years ago the sound was awful but I think that was more down to the soundman.

It makes me laugh though cause most of the bands I've seen at Islington Academy have been pure sample-based, basically most sounds coming out of a computer. How hard can it be?![/quote]

Live sound is an art unto itself.

If you think that the sound quality will vary depending on whether you have 20 people in a room or 200, so the acoustics of the venue will vary depending on the time of day.

And of course, were they running all their samples from one machine, or various machines, and were there any live synths thrown in for good measure.

And finally, the set up will change for each act.

Although I will say that the few times I have seen these sort of bands live, the sound engineers never seem to have a clue.

At WGT when they have industrial in a big hall, it must be a nightmare getting all the equations right to have the right sound, but low and behold the music is awesome for every act at any time of the day and for any size crowd.

That must be the joy of going to a dedicated event run by dedicated people who know what they are doing.

That's why people such as myself are at university doing the whole Music Tech thing...we actually get taught, amongst tons of other things, about acoustics and the whole thing with reverb, standing waves, bass traps etc.
With the rising numer of people taking courses in this kind of area let's hope there's a bright future for live sound technicians who know what they're doing :D
Speaking of problems Mesh had technical issues during their Carling Accademy, Islington gig. It can't go smooth every time...it's just human error (or a dumb-ass techy if you prefer lol).

I agree that things can go wrong and people make mistakes, it happens. But this seems to be a more and more recurring theme at gigs, and with the increased prices of todays tickets you would expect a little better.

...and to add to your point about failing equipment. Not only do we, the audience expect better, but so do people using equipment for professional use such as recording and live gigs. Is it me or does it seem like equipment just isn't made as reliable as it used to?
Equipment seems to have such a short life span now...I blame poor manufacturing at the cost of saving a few on the production costs. Even modern day appliances like TVs, DVD players/recorders and VCRs and those bloody flimsy headphones ideal for travelling.
I'm not defending technicians completely because I'm sure there's been many occasions where you get some real cowboy who makes a hash of everything but it's partly manufacturing too IMO.

Swarf were in the original lineup... odd that i did not see many people who aparently wished for their appearance and who live in Brighton....very strange.....

Guy is gonna kill me for this lol...
I thought Swarf pulled off a good performance I really enjoyed it (to listen to...still think Liz looks a little wooden/awkward live).
3rd time I've seen them now and each time they've improved slightly. In fact this one at BC was a big improvement over the last one I saw (Cruxshadows). Got the album too. 'Subtext' (tracklisted as 'Drown' on the album - it's a typo error on the cover) gives me goose-bumps with that angelic-like 'aaah' harmony bit!
By the way it was nice to meet you and Guy this weekend.

Swarf bore me to tears, but hey, it's only my own tastes. Rotersand were better.

Nice to meet you too. Have seen you around a fair bit and could have sworn that we've said hello before.

I missed Psychophile (you can kick my arse later) but I'm not worried since I'll be hoping to see them soon when they next gig. It's not that I didn't want to see them it's just time keeping was a bit dodgy...my bad!

By the way Guy regarding your reply about seeing me around etc.
Yeah you may have been with SP that time I went to Slime the very first time and I was with Luci. I remember SP saying hi and mentioning seeing me on this forum. I don't know if we've actually chatted before but I know we have now so that's cool.
