I'm not into the Gothic scene much, but I enjoy the club and that's why I signed up here. Anyway, I'm more of a Metal fan and I want to know if anyone else here is into Metal.
Anything from Slayer, Deicide and Pantera, tight down to 36 Crazyfists, Poison The Well & Hatebreed.

I've been and to be honest, it's crap. The best club for Metal, is Borderline.
As I said though, I like this scene as far as clubs and people go, aswell as my own scene. In my case it's all for experience.

Yep,
I'm into metal as well. But I do like goth stuff, electro-goth, goth metal, if you know the "beauty in darkness" compilation series, that's the kind of stuff I love...
Slimelight is cool, the music is good. I haven't found any metal club worth mentioning so far, any suggestions?
I definetily dislike nu-metal though!

You can find good Nu Metal and you just have to look at the Deftones, but it's all to do with personal taste.
As for Metal clubs, there is only one that is half decent and that's the Borderline in Tottenham Court Road. I tend to back off from the club scene as they tend to play a mixture of things, not just straight up metal.
I'm sick of Punk, Goth, Grunge and Garage Rock crap, why can't a club stick to metal, just like most other clubs stick th there scene.

Hey Will_Haven, nice to see someone else who likes metal :)
I have to say tho that I kinda prefer the older stuff. I dunno, maybe it's just having fond memories of the music, or maybe it was really just that much better "back in the day"?
Personally I thnk the state of metal these days is appauling . It's either all old hat, unoriginal crap or just utter drivel. Jook at Limp Bizkit! Oh, and wtf is up with Metallica?! I thought they were a metal band, not middle of the road country music! Pah.
The thing for me is that if i go to a metal club the night's generally ruined for me by all the crap "modern" metal that they play. I don't mind stuff like Linkin Park and Evanescence, but stuff like OPM & Andrew WK just make me wanna hurl.
To end on a coupla high notes tho:
1. You're right, the Deftones are fantastic! Maybe it's that they've managed to keep their own unique style while every other "similar" bands (as the media labels them) sound more & more alike? They haven't sold out, and it pays...unfortunately not financially it would seem but the music's definately better for it.
Minerva is a top album.
2. I got to see A Perfect Circle last week, and DAMN they were good! :)
Maynard James Keenan is a god, that's all there is to it really.

I used to frequent the Borderline back in 95-98, and what you said is so right about them playing too much of a mixture of stuff, same goes for The Wag and The Hellfire Club... it seemed to get less metal and way too much punk and rap and hip-hop shyte which really pissed me off the whole metal scene.
The only metal club night i regularly attended was 'Slam' @ St. Moritz which was a great night albeit a tiny dancefloor. The DJ's there played a decent mixture of Metal, Industrial and Goth. A long way off to what i have been listening to in the last few years, but it was good at the time, and a fab atmosphere with all the metalheads, rivetheads and goths dancing together ... oh ... and casuals too
As far as i'm concerned though... Metal has had it... it might be Nu.. but definitely knackered
PS... Deftones are not Nu-Metal... or my Around the Fur cd will have to get chucked.. LOL

I like metal as well as just about everything else. I pretty much only buy guitar based stuff but I listen to a very broad range.
As for clubs the best metal club I went to was called Asylum and was at the 144 (I think) charring cross road. Thing is it only ran for 6 months. I believe the club owners started another night at the Garage called Insomnia but I've never been. Not even sure if that one is running anymore even. I think metal has pretty much died appart from the Boarderline and maybe the Metro on Thursday. Unfortunatly if your over 25 you'll look old in the Metro! :)

Well I have to go on my own now, as all of my friends are into other things. It's a shame, because I really get a kick out of Metal and not all the modern stuff is crap. The commerical Nu Metal and stuff along that line is and how they call it Metal is beyond me.
I listen to a lot of Hardcore, Death Metal, Balck Metal, Grindcore, Metalcore and old school Thrash.
Good metal bands:
Labrat
Raging Speehorn
Landmine Spring
Stampin Ground
Hondo Maclean
Johnny Truant
Killswitch Engage
Arch Enemy
Hate Eternal
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Morbid Angel
System Of A Down
Zyklon
The Berzerker
Napalm Death
Decapitiated
Madball
Slayer
Exodus
Pantera
Syritcon
Testament
Opeth
Soilwork
InFlames
Childern Of Bodom
The Haunted
Deicide
Vital Remains
Iced Earth
Posion The Well
Superjoint Ritual
Deftones
Mayhem
Death
Chimaira
Shadows Fall
Eyehategod
Sinister
Knukeldust
Biohazard
Venom
Dimmu Borgir
Spultura
Black Sabbath
Fuck I'm Dead
Hatebreed
Nuclear Assult
Akercoke
Nile
I could go on and on and on.
For the life of me, I can't understand why people think Metal is dead, especially when they produce such good bands as these. Another thing about Metal is that you keep finding new bands that keep the genre as a whole fresh. It's all down to opinions, but I think Metal is healthy.

I'm no longer really interested in "contemporary" metal, but to suggest metal is dead is bollocks. Nu Metal seems to paint that picture but that's just marketing and young kids. Scratch below the surface and you can still unearth some nasty nasty stuff down there. Maybe Death/doom/black metal lost some weight but that's not a bad thing.
BTW Pungent Stench is playing in the Electrowerkz in November I believe.

Very constructive disagreement. :? I did not suggest that metal was dead. I mearly said that I believed as far as dedicated clubs were conserned that it was almost dead. :P There was a time when Metal was predominantly played in clubs. Sadly now almost no more.
On a similar note I have remembered one place where the loud stuff is still played. Sunday night at the Ben Crouch Tavern near Oxford Circus. They also used to do a Death and Thrash night as well but I can't find any details. I'm waiting for an email back from the organiser so I'll let you know. :D

Hehe sorry, I wasn't disagreeing with you, merely replying to Will_Haven's post, not conciencly agreeing with his disagreement(?) ;)
Ehr..
Guess I'm just a bit annoyed with Metal (and Goth) slowly moving from a sub-culture to a pop-culture. That and the fact that it was early in the morning ;)
Oh, and thanks for the tip.

I have the details of the night. :)
I got my pubs mixed up. The Ben Crouch stuff on Sunday is just classic rock/goth. :?
The loud night is....
Saturdays: Marlborough Head = Thrash Death Gore Grind, and other nasties.

WiLL_HaVENs post a few posts ago with the long list....
1) Can you list any more bands? </sarcasm> :P
2) You hasd slayer twice. ;)
Ive been listening to nightwish recently.... *really* cheesy/cliche lyrics (but thats what makes it good) sung by a female opera singer with a metal band. Some really good solos. It sounds *nothing* like evanescence before you ask....

Just want to tell you, I hate nu-metal. I don't even want to call it nu-metal because it abuses the word "metal". I think I'm going to start calling it nu-yuck or something like that.
And can somebody tell me what's all that about opera-metal like nightwish? Ant what's all that about evanescence? Call me stupid, but I really don't get it!

i'm more into metal i spose,, but i'd rather listen to EBM etc when i'm out cos metal clubs are full of aggravated idiots. cant deal with the really heavy stuff though. although Nile are lyrics are very interesting
i'll stick with Tool and sabbath
... cos metal clubs are full of aggravated idiots.
You are so right!!
i'll stick with Tool and sabbath
Good choice ... Sabbath are one of the originals!
yeah, some people think they are cheesy but at the time (and still not to a point) they were the darkest thing about. its like weird hippy/goth/metal stuff. what other band would sing about faeries wearing boots and dancing with dwarves and still be taken seriously 30 years later.
I've got an original copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1972) ... I bought it 2nd hand in the 80s ... I can't find any cheese on it!!
tis a great album, though i always preferred master of reality for some reason. obviously when i say i like sabbath, i only mean pre 80's sabbath.
i'm pretty sure thats just a given fact though. 80's sabbath :?
Yeah, I agree with that, although Ozzy has also done some great stuff! (Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman ... really good. No More Tears ... exceptionally good!)
some of ozzy's stuff was ok, never really listened to much of it tbh, just the well known ones. it was a bit too "hair metal", kinda put me off. no more tears was good though
And Tool rock the werewolfs hairy anus too :D
yeah, without doubt, nicely put by the way
maynard james keenan is a genius (the word isnt adequate)
i would go as far too say that Tool are the best band ever. they do everything so well its scary, i cant think of one crap song they've done
And A Perfect Circle keep us happy in the lulls between Tool albums.
Have you been to a Tool/Perfect Circle gig btw? Highly recommended :)
Rock on London, Rock on Tokyo. Mitsubishi...spread the word.
yep, went to see APC last time they were over.. tbh i thought was a little disapointed, i think its cos of new line up, they seemed a bit tired, or maybe just mashed up, who knows.. Gravity and oderes were excellent though. all the stupid kids at the front chanting for judith all the way thru was a bit annoying. when is new tool album due anyway?

APC are alright, think Tool is shite though, but that's me coming from the death \trash\black metal background. Shadowsfall are very cool.
Ah, I missed APC the last time but saw them the gig before that...which was great fun.
Tool are excellent live too. Quite possibly the best gig I've been to :)
No idea when the new albums out tho.

8O heretic!!!
i was very worried when there were rumours about tool splitting, i'd hate to not see them live. i think they are in studio working on new album now, so not too long methinks.
they are going to have a hard time topping lateralus though
Best gig ever - Whitezombie '96
See I woulda loved to have seen WhiteZombie...but there's not much chance of that now is there, plus Rob's gone a bit shite on his todd :(

Agreed something inhis old age, also he doesn't have the hot babe in his band anymore.
But he did do House of a 1000 corpses which was excellent
I liked it too, tho I think he should've stopped about 20 mins before the end...that was around the point when the film kinda degenerated into silliness...you know the bit i mean *going underground*

Someone say metal? That's my first love
I love generally everything that's considered "alternative", except indie and teen-pop-punk.
EBM/Industrial gained a fecking high place on my list, when I went to Slimelight for my 20th birthday last June.
Gotta say that Assembalge 23 are one of my favs. Oo oo and Dulce Liquido.

Hi, I've only just signed up to this forum a few minutes ago, but having read through some of the posts, I wanted to reply to this one because it relates to my tastes.
I have loved metal music for years. Even now, one of my fave bands is Metallica, despite their ever-evolving musical style I still enjoy them. My other big love is Rammstein.
Having been a thrash head for years, then discovering industrial music properly through Rammstein (sure I already knew of NIN, Ministry, etc beforehand), I went off on a tangent and ended up... here!
I still love my metal. The difference now is that I am also now heavily into the industrial/goth/ebm/electro stuff.
I love Cubanate, I've known of them for years. Also, Covenant, Apoptygma, VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Funker Vogt, Velvet Acid Christ, Project Pitchfork, Hocico... there are loads of cool bands I have discovered, and I am still discovering more. I recently discovered Rotersand and they are great!
It's amazing how heavy a song can be, even when there's no guitar.
Akam.
Alexander

<-- another metaller.
Whilst I really like the industrial/goth/ebm/electro stuff I think my tastes have changed recently so metal is ruling my tastes again. I think this was soon after I started listening to 'System Of A Down'. 8O
Oddly enough I think there was a lynch point in the mid-90s where goth was either going to go more rock/metal or more bleepy, and unfortunately for the rockers and metallers out there it went more bleepy! I think this was mostly brought on by various DJs siding with the european side of goth, which is a shame really because I think in a lot of ways goth betrayed it's roots and most of the goth rock/metal bands have since turned away from the goth side of things or packed up altogether. Bands like Killing Miranda and Dream Disciples seem to be distancing themselves from any menion of the G-word at all, even though their members are individually more associated with the goth clubs (old habits die hard I suppose).
Oh, and as for metal being dead in clubs, it seems to have gone through a bit of a resurgence recently. Sin City, Xplosive, Rockscene all starting up or making a comeback on a Friday, Sanctum at Electrowerkz too of course. However, still next to bugger all on a Saturday for some reason, so I'm still going to be going to Slimelight in the mean time. ;)
