Personally, i love Whitley Striebers take on the Vampire legend in his book 'The Hunger' he really did come up with a wholly beautiful spin on the genre that is thrilling, sexy and tragic.
I'm reading the sequel to it now 'The Last Vampire' and it's wonderful so far, plus i have already placed an order for the next one 'Liliths Dream' for it's release next month on paperback :D
The 1981 film version of it is my fave "Vampire" flick yet, it has been since i first watched it when i was a wee little stranger in the early 80's *giggles*
Yep it's a bit weird.. but i like that
David Bowie's in this film, but don't let that sway you off from seeing it, he turns out a truly fitting performance, plus the opening scene with Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) singing Bela Lugosi's Dead in the nightclub is a nice touch
Now Miriam Blaylock is my type of vampire 8)

I would say Bram Stockers - Dracula ( for a true classic take on the Vampire Genere)
In terms of mindless Film viewing, Blade
Oooooooooh it would have to be 'Near Dark' now that is a great vampire movie.
Most seem to disagree with me on this one, but I really like: Razorblade Smile (and you can spot some old Slimers in it!)

Book wise I'd have to go with Tom Holland's - "The Vampyre: The Secret History of Lord Byron".
Films are a bit harder...mmm...
Well tacky and cliché as the Hammer films are, they do have a certain something... "The Twins of Evil", "Vampire Lovers", "Countess Dracula" all rock in a kind of lesbian chic way. Of course it also goes without saying that everything Christopher Lee ever did for Hammer, no matter how re-cycled and badly scripted, carry a sort of charm (for me anyway).
"Vampyres" is quite cool in a sort of soft porn way...
"The Breed" and "Blade" & "Blade 2" are cool too...
But I've also watched some absolutely terrible vampire flicks. "Embrace of a Vampire" with Martin Kemp is dire, and I'm not too keen on "Vampires" either... It's such an overworked theme, that you have to be really innovate to actually do something new with it...

I always had a bit of a dislike for what I always thought was over romanticism in vampire films until I watched "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" which was much more up my street with it's stripping ladies and OTT violence (so call me uncultured ;)).Also Like Razor Blade Smile for it's very English tackiness.
Rivetmike
Nicely put Mike ... English tackiness it definitely has!!
Although not vampire, The Crow must rate up there as a great film too, with it's dark moodiness.
The Crow - City of Angels, however is LOG!!! ...but has some nice images (Crow riding black Ducati Monster) and some cool music too, but the acting is soooo wooden and the plot? ...like I said: LOG!

Ok, not a movie, but a short lived tv series I liked was Ultraviolet, which managed, reasonably well to bridge the gap between the "magic" properties of vampires and the world of science (carbon tipped bullets), and was an all english cast which was nice, we hear far too many american voices on tv.

Near Dark, by far!
Stories:
Revelations in Black (Carl Richard Jacobi)
Just another vampire story (Randall Garrett)
Carved in flesh (Tom Rawson Hilbourne)
The undead die (Edward Everett Evans)

*takes a superficial approach*
The movie of Queen of the Damned... 'cause Stuart Townsend looks so goddamn pretty in it!
(I'm still only 19, I'm allowed to think like that)

i have a couple Near dark, Nosferatu, Shadow of the vampire, and lost boys, though for sheer tackyness ill have to put down John Carpenters Vampires..
mike
Good call ... Lost Boys was really good (especially at the time) and had a classic Doors tune as it's theme too!!
But..............it was re-recorded by Echo and teh Bunnymen!!
Not cool!
x
No, still cool ... it was a "very close to the original" cover!

Is there any point in doing a cover if you can't bring something new to it?
Well, there's two ways of doing a cover in my opinion.
1. As close to the original as possible.
2. New interpretation.
Both are valid ... but whether you like any given cover is purely subjective, a matter of taste. I actually think that the Echo & The Bunnymen cover is a very close (to the original) cover, with a slightly fuller & cleaner sound. It worked for me when I first saw lost boys!!
The original is also a very fine tune from The Doors' finest album (well, in my opinion anyway) ... Strange Days

Yeah I see where you're coming from, and having just re-watched the Lost Boys last Sunday for the first time in about 10 years, I agree, it's cool.
I just have a bit of an aversion to covers in general though. I've been around too many people who think they're the next big thing because they can roll off a few Extreme covers *shudder* (I kid you not!), but can't do a single track of their own.
Generally I think covers are alright if they're in tribute to an artist you respect or if you can bring something fresh to them. There are a couple of covers I adore - like MM's "Sweet Dreams", evil song to start off with, but he makes it even more twisted IMHO.
Each to thier own I guess...

KMFDM doing Madonnas Material Girl springs to mind as a particularly "wrong" cover version.

MM do an excellent cover of AC/DCs Highway to hell. That's what covers should be all about.
What, KMFDM doing it again? A treat for the freaks?
I agree with Vampira though. The original's usually best! I used to sing in Rock/Metal bands. We did one cover (Led Zep - Rock'n'Roll), just 'cos we liked it lots and were never likely to hear them in the flesh playing that tune. The rest of our songs were OURS!! The way it should be!

Well let's face it,tribute bands are never going to get anywhere are they?,bands like Cureheads have probably reached the pinnacle of what tribute bands can ever hope to acheive and they still often play to a half empty venues across the land.Bands really are not going to get anywhere without doing something a little original.

Point 1 - Vampire film - Blade, anything that kicks the fuck out of these over-rated, "romantic" piece of fictional nonsense is cool by me (Dusk Til Dawn has to come second)
Point 2 - What is the point of doing a cover which is "as close to the original as possible"...just buy the original, stop being a cheap fuck. If you are going to cover something, bring something new to it
Point 3 - Marilyn Manson are a band, so what "he" did to it, is mainly driven by the evil guitar riff which was (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong) played by Zim Zum (cool bloke), so surly you (Vampira) should say "I really love what they did with it" or "I really love what Zim Zum did with it"
:p

I thought that Zim Zum had left ages ago,I think the riff in question was probably played by John/ny 5 (whatever his name is),Zim Zum left soon after the Antochrist Superstar tour.

Accepted, slip of the fingers. Our Brian does tend to dominate MM though...

having a bit of trouble reading all of the stuff
but the dance of the the vampires by roman polanski is a really cheesy and funny movie.
the story goes like this: Two vampire hunters are in transilvania to hunt down yes you guessed it vampires.after a rather freezing and ice cold journey where the old proffesor needs to be defrossed .At the inn were they habitat things start to happen.one evening the the daughter of the couple who own the place wants a bath(well she always likes a bath).and during that bath she gets kidnapped by the local vampire .a lot of stuff happens includes a sledge chase in coffins and a gay vampire who hit on one of the vampire hunters.the rest i wont tell :)

My Fave "Vampire" story is "V" its more a bio from someone, but worth reading... as it says on the tin so to speak " "V" is a new tome about the dark path, teachings and traditions of Strigoi Vii (living vampyrism). It contains a collection of articles, essays and explanations of our dreams and expressions of modern vampyrism. The best writers and creative minds within the vampyre subculture including Michelle Belanger, Father Sebastian, Layil Umbralux and Madame X give inspiration to challenge and enhance your views."
If you don't beleive in "real vamps" then its a great story, if u do its still a great read.
My fav films Underworld, but I did help out with the documentry on it "fangs vs fiction" LOL thou I was not "on" it.

has anybody ever read "I am Legend" by (i think) Richard Matheson, but i lent the book to a friend so im not sure thats his name, hmm, but anyway, it's excellent, a really original approach to it all, i recommend it fully :)
as for films, its gotta be interview with a vampire, tom cruise laughing and the 'louie louie, always whining!' at the end just gets me, its so damn cool! and kirsten dunst just makes me want a baby vampire.
queen of the damned though - i thought was appalling. "oooh we move all blurry". yeh. that makes u great vampires. and all aaliyah does it walk around wiggling. actually - standing on its own it might be a vaguely credible film, but in the context that its technically a sequal to interview with a vampire? *shudders* its just bad.
lost boys = so classically timewarped yet u know u gotta love it!!!
Blade 3 is out in august, i cant wait!

"I am Legend" was a great book, which funnily enough I too have lent to a friend, and am unlikely to get back! Had a really good twist ending.
Whilst I *know* deep down that Queen of the Damned was bad, I find myself coming back to it repeatedly as something dark and watchable with a good soundtrack (I still have a softspot for Korn, please forgive me).
An interesting link between the above is that on the DVD there's a video for a Static-X song "Cold" which is filmed as an homage to I am legend. Wayne Static of the unfeasible beard/hair is trapped in his house with vampires trying to break in.
As for other films, well Interview.. was great but I really have to be in the mood. Same is true for The Hunger and Near Dark. Glad to see mentions too for Razorblade Smile and Twins of Evil!

hmm, who's that V book by? sounds really interesting.
Underworld had a lot of things right about it, but what annoyed me was the vague ending, i understand they want to make a sequel, but they should still have a conclusive ending to the first one - I HATE VAGUE ENDINGS. they story can continue, but at least conclude the one u were telling in that film. it proper pisses me off, i dont think films shud be made with the intention of making more, each story should have its conclusion. the blade films do this well - they can be continued, but the plot of each story is all nicely wrapped up.

hehe, but u must admit that the actor doesnt do justice to the coolness of lestats character? i do love jon davies (sp?) cameo as the greasy ticket tout, hehe. i think the coolest use of music in the film was deftones in the petal filled bath tub, im not a deftones fan, but i completely loved that song in that scene, pure vampire sexuality :) lovin' it! hehe,

I distinctly remember as I was coming out of the cinema from Queen of the Damned, I was behind some middle-aged housewife type and I overheard her say to the friend she was with, "that movie has made me really horny!"
I guess a good vampire movie/story should demonstrate a good amount of fear mixed with eroticism.

Going back a couple of posts to the theme song of Lost boys.
The theme songs wasnt People are strange, written by Dorrs, performed by Echo and the bunny men.
The theme song was Cry little sister, written by Michael Mainieri + Gerard Mcmann, performed by Gerard Mcmann.
But it was and always will be an excellent movie.
I read Anne Rice's Vampire chronicals vol1. As far as im concerned the movies did it no justice. Though they were not to bad.
I enjoy just about any vampire movie be it cheezy, comical, black n white (nosferato) or every day hollywood style.

Fave Vampire book(s) anything in the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton not just vampires all the creatures of the night are there. Anita herself is a Necromancer/Animator, sweetheart of certain various (11 books now) supernaturals , and a legal vampire executioner aswell as working with the police as an expert on the supernatural.
Fave film not sure but a choice between Lost boys, Dusk till Dawn or Blade.
Although I agree Razor Blade smile is pretty cool and deserves mention for having the best twist I've seen in any film.

i recently read a Laurell k Hamilton book-Guilty Pleasures, and found it ok as filler but not really my cup o tea, no offence but it seemed like pretty simple reading....saying that i did love the zombie/vamp mix i might get another book of hers as it was good bath book:D
As for other films, it seems a lot of people state the Hunger as a favourite film, personally its a film that i find neither here nor there...don't like it/don't hate it :D i tend to like vampire films that are a bit tongue-in-cheek, Dusk till Dawn is a definate film i love, stylish but not too serious......Razorblade Smile too,it looks great and Eileen Daly is just brilliant.
I fucking hate Queen Of The Damned with a vengance, Stuart Townsend is a cheesemeister and looks like a skag addict in it....its jus one long tedious MTV-kid piece o pap.
Rarggh,i'm done moaning for today.
