View Full Version : Worst Slimelight ever. (02/10/04)

Last nights Slimelight was dreadful and for those who were not present it may even be beyond your imagination. The rumoured three floor special did not take place as the lower level was hired out to another club. Slimelight however was packed and the usual Goth and punk crowd who would normally come for the trad goth floor turned up anyway. The music got off to a good start with Corny who plays a good selection of Goth music (as opposed to Nils and Steves New Model Army, synthy Cure song and 80's cheese) and then.... disaster struck. A lady Dj took to the booth to play what only seemed like an Ibiza 96 CD stuck on the repeat button. The music was so bad that people were leaving the club and complaining to the lady at the door and the management. However the torture did not end there because we had two Dj's up after her who played some of the scene music and some very techno stuff that would get them a guest slot at a club on Leicester square. The only people who danced to this pile of shite were the large number of trendys, people who know nothing about music and culture and all those guys with short brown hair, glowsticks and Å60 cyberdog t-shirts. Even the EBM & Industrial regulars sat out these electric ballroom one year ago styleee sets.
My open mindedness does not extend to compromise. Slimelight should not or never have compromised it's music policy, it's dress codes, membership rules, the social levels which were policed by the members to keep all the trolls away. I have never seen the club empty so fast in my life! By 2.00am half the people had gone! I don't take my life into my hands by getting on the night bus all dressed up to sit in a room full of trendys and Cyberdog devotees listening to crap music which most of the people do not even know. I see my post getting bashed by the forum police, but they are probably the ones who in the absence of the Goths, Punks and rivetheads have become the hierachy.

It's a shame that you had such a bad night,.
I on the other hand had a really good night, with some fine music (for my tastes, played on both floors) I actually thought it was a far better night than many I have attended. Luck of the draw I guess.
As for the three floor night - as you are posting on this forum I imagine that you recieve the Slimes e-mails. They send them out when they are having special events and stuff. Not recieving one of these e-mails and also checking the website was enough to indicate to me that there wasn't going to be a three floor event.
There were a significant amount ot trad goths out who usually don't go to the club for many factors - not least of which was the trad goth album launch at The Underworld followed by an aftershow at the Dev. After all if you've come all the way to London for a gig (there were people there from Scotland) then you may as well make a night of it.

My point may have been, having read your response, that the main floor at Slimelight is becoming too musically similar to Techno level. In fact I have noticed during the past few three floor specials that the 'trad' and 'industec' floors were both packed and that the main floor was weak on people. One night I recall walking through there at 3.00am to find only two people on the dance floor. This was the week when the weather was really hot and they had the seating area outside. The trad floor was absolutely packed and not with people who had come to cool down but people who were into the music. I also heard the industec floor was busy too. Maybe Slimelight should work more on specialised levels with good DJ's who will play different setlists every week and update their record collection.
(I also here that the DJ from last night may not be allowed to DJ at Slimelight again after all the complaints and people walking out)
I was aware there would be know Goth floor, though other people weren't, particulary those who do not use the mailing list. There have been times in the past when we have only had one or two days notification about the three floors and it hasn't even gone up on the website until the Saturday if at all.

I believe the Slimelight website was advertising a trad goth 3-floor special at some point, but it seems to have disappeared since then. I know there were a number of people that also read about the 3-floor special some of whom went to Slimelight especially for it.
There were rumors and/or speculation going around that this was only done because there were a few "rival" goth events running in London that night. No idea how much truth there is to this.
As for the music, I've heard a lot of people saying they seem to think the music has been getting rather crap recently, but then Slimelight seems to have a policy against hiring decent DJs especially on the middle floor.
Still, you'll be back for more next week right?
Well, I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

admittably it was bad, when i originally arrived, i could swear i was hearing "rock" upstairs, and originally spent most of the time just talking to most of my "fellow entirepreneurs" but then all i could see in my mind, was "hey im here once a week, i work my arse off to get here, im going to go and dance my friggin bolloks of to whatever they play", this lasted for about 1 song and wandered off, there was one part i did like upstairs but it didnt last very long, i am tempted to agree with illuminated, but even i have seen worse

Most certainly not! The next time however I may return with a good book and my personal stereo.
I did leave earlier than intended and have left earlier from a three floor special where they had some Dj playing 80's cheese and crappy plastic Goth (cruxshadows etc). I don't understand how people think this club is going to thrive under these circumstances (or even the scene for that matter). One good thing was they had more smoke on that dancefloor than at a Sisters Of Mercy concert thus proetecting my eyes from all the pathetic drug addled 17 year olds 'glowsticking'.

Demonbitch you do not even know what music I listen to therefore you are in know position to judge how broadminded my tastes are. Isn't it lovely to here the 'open minded' goth say 'I like everything I do, Goth, EBM, Industrial, Noise and Metal'.
I don't go to Slimelight to listen to a broad selection of music. The nature of Slimelight is changing because they are alienating the core members by playing music that is associated with other scenes. It is apparent to any long term member that this is killing the club to such an extent that the management may have even called the police to get rid of someone who is disrespecting the 'rules'. Slimelight is going to end up like the electric ballroom on a friday did if your not careful.

Slimelight is always changing. I doubt it's in any real trouble of being "killed off" though. At least not until Dette and Mak decide to sell it and I doubt that'll happen for a few years yet.
Realistically I don't think the organisers care too much about the quality of the music, and by that I mean compared with other aspects, as it's really a very small part of the appeal of the club. I've seen a lot of complaints and compliments about the DJs and/or music over the years, both here and elsewhere, and I very much doubt it has much effect on the decisions of the organisers.
The simple case seems to be: put up with it, or don't go. Trying to change things, complaining or complimenting, doesn't really work for the most part I don't think.
Well, almost every Sunday morning at about 7:35, I thank Mak for the music and a great night. I have done this for years ... so, at least he has one grateful "core member"!! 8)

Slimelight is no longer a goth club Illuminated,I don't think that it advertises itself as such anymore.Yes it says that it plays gothic music from time to time but not exclusively.
As pointed out above I doubt the owners particularily care that a few people are not enamoured with recent playlists as every time I have been there recently the club seems to be doing a pretty good trade.
I didn't see an e-mail advertising a goth floor for last weekend either?

speaking of open mind... if you are talking about people wanting to wear chav stuff in the comfort of their own home, then fine but why offend anybody with their lack of style?
no seriously, what peopel do is pretty irrelavant, as much as my bitching about it but i think the music is a very important thing and slimelight is unfortunately one of the few venues that actually plays what a lot of people call powernoise (industrial electronic/techno hard style)
i love it, \nd i know what the usual brighton crapage does to me.. i get argressive and pick fights... and i try to be patient, gowd knows i try.
well okay, there is trad goths and yes, they shall listen to their sisters of mercy all night long, i salute their ability to stay alive and not commit mass suicide as the trad music numbs their angst and pain, i find EBM for most parts just like trance with whinge lyrics but i can deal with it... what i do not understand is that DJ s keep playing their shit, even if they see that the dancefloor empties and empties...
hang on a sec, yes you cannot ONLY and ever hit EVERYBODY's taste but that is by no means what it is all about... you can introduce new music if you wish and a venue like slimelight can deal with people leaving the floor for a bit and return when they feel safe with the music they know, like and dance to but why do DJs still play on, if after 3 songs? is it part of the parcel that DJs do not have eyesight?
if its the case of the pre-prepared set and cannot be changed, then all i can say: burn a copy at home, stick it into a machine, run...
naww honestly...
on the other hand what is wrong with people who only ever dance to the same old shite that they tried, tested and like....
what is the worst that can happen?
do you really think anyone notices you at slimelight... well apart form when you do a snowwy and you go onto the dancefloor first before anyone else dances... but...
anyway, enough ranting, the rivets are back and need music and MSGentur will be great ... i am looking forward to seeing/hearing him.

The top floor is the "harder" floor
The bottom floor is the "softer" floor
I use the terms "hard" abd "soft" as hideous over-generalisations that I hope capture the basics of the music attempted to be played on these floors.

Well, while I can't comment on Saturday just gone, I can say that the week before was utter chaos, and not in a good way! I arrived at the club at about 12:30, spent about 40 minutes helping out with the madness that was the cloakroom queue, and then spent the next few hours in the upstairs cafe.
I'm not entirely sure what was going on that week, but it was uber manic & the atomosphere for the early part of the night was just plain wierd. People were leaving left right & centre (on of my friends stayed for a total of 15 minutes!), and I have to admit I was very close to bailing myself (something that I very rarely do, if only for the fact that I can't get home easily until the morning).
Anyway, the atmosphere stayed pretty icky thru til about 5/5:30, when the night thankfully really picked up & I had a great time :)
I'm glad I stayed, but the first five hours were a real killer! :(
I reckon it probably gets like this due to the random nature of people who come to the club to see the bands at the beginning of the night. There is often no dress code for the gigs and these people then stay for the club ... and the much talked about chaos ensues.

There's no doubt that this was partly the cause. It also didn't help that the music was utter pish (and no, I'm not talking Ibiza Goth/Future Pop or whatever you wanna call it...I can't even put a title to what was being played, but I'm sure if you ask the people that were there at that time they'll atest to the crappiness, it wasn't even suited to Slime in the slightest) until Pete came on about 1:30 and started a campaign to save us :) (altho even this wasn't enough truth be told)

all i meant was, because it was pissing it down with rain, it made everyone with me feel awful, and there was way more people than i've ever seen, making it rather claustrophobic... plus people kept treading on my bf's dress, pissing him off even more, and there were numerous colds going around! it wasn't anything with the place, more like the states of mind of the people around. (please don't make me explain any deeper, i have a headache  )

on the whole, the only downer to the actual venue was that it was complete chaos, and not in a good way!
ON the whole, I find slimelight quite easy to understand.
The top floor is the "harder" floor
The bottom floor is the "softer" floor
I use the terms "hard" abd "soft" as hideous over-generalisations that I hope capture the basics of the music attempted to be played on these floors.

lets bitch about the brighton clubs... actually last Lowlife was not too bad really, though i dont understand why they turned goths away in favour of admitting the rock crowd, who got plenty of clubs to go to anyway...
... oh well, not really my problem, i come up to london and slimelight cos i like it like there...
for anyone who hates glowsticks: they havent arrived in brighton yet and i have never done my mental raving lunatic thing there... so why dont you go to brighton and stop whining about people like me having fun?

also brighton is ideal for people who like old skool 4 eva goth .... its virtually the only thing you'll ever hear there... so no more whining, i go up to london for the NOIZE, you got down to brighton for the trad, everybody is happy :P ;) :!: :D

The aboration that is Satisfaction fits none of the above...

I won't be (and from what I have heard of the new Monolith CD a few people will be a bit surprised). To be honest I'm more excited about Xotox though ;)

What's this about the new Monolith (or as Snowwy puts it Monolyth  ) CD? Is it not that good?
Where were you thinking of buggering off to then, Snowster?

It's got some more cold electroclash-y elements in the mix this time, which I think sounds interesting but I guess it'll put some of the purist crowd off it a bit.

It does sound too bad. They weren't bad at Mfest (from what I remember between wanting to be sick, I went back to the hotel during their set) and I presume that it was new material they were playing.

well you can't get away from gabba/speedcore at Sick & Twisted either! At least at Live Evil it's usually so harsh and fast it's more like a wall of noise than some of the less appealing gabba/speedcore/"industrial drum'n bass" around..
Anyone for Drop the Bomb on Friday btw?

I don't think it's been that well advertised. I actually read about it on a German website, gabbafront.de.. There is some info on the http://www.egglondon.net website, but that's it as far as I know!
