View Full Version : Wearing Armor to an Event

Hello everyone,

My name is Phil. I'm from the US and I'm kind of curious about this culture of alternative dress. Having always been into lots of different sci fi media (video games, movies, anime, books, art, etc...) I have always had a fantasy to own some kind of "futuristic" outerware - particularly futuristic battle armor.

So I recently commissioned an artist at a company called Nightmare Armor Studios (professional propmakers for video games, films, and conventions) to create a custom suit of armor following some of the aesthetics of Ironman, Halo, Star Wars, Gundam, GI Joe, etc...I'm sure many may view this simply as cosplay. But seeing as how it kind of follows with the whole "futuristic" theme of CyberGoth, and how I have always been a fan of drum & bass, trip-hop, electronic, and other "futuristic sounding" types of music, I was thinking that I might start wearing this to some CyberGoth (correct term?) venues.

It's understandable that people may think of me as a poser for doing this, but I can tell you my main reason for wearing something like this is because I just love the artistry behind the armor ...but also simply because I like the way it looks on me more than any other piece of clothing I have! And if the armor was "real" (i.e. provided real protection, could fly, enhance my abilities...name your sci-fi reference) It would be my day-to-day "garment" of choice more often!

So I'm just wondering if something like this has ever been worn before at a club or other venue - and how it would go down if I wore it. The armor is molded of a very strong liquid polymer (which hardened to make the suit hard, thick, and 40+ lbs) and although I have a decent range of motion, it would be more for the look then for a lot of dancing. Also not sure how the helmet would fly. I know that people conceal their faces with gas masks in this scene. But for security reasons of course, I would know well enough to remove my helmet upon entering any club to allow security to see my identity. I imagine as long as I am not knocking into people while moving or being violent - it wouldn't be a problem. Am I right? And there are no metal parts to the armor so it would not set off any detectors for weapons.

So yes, your thoughts please!

Well i can safely say i've never seen it at slimes! lol...i can't see a problem personally, though it's not really clothing of this "scene" so to speak...it shouldnt be too much of a problem but i think it would definetly be a case of speaking to the door staff of which event you end up at - and in all honesty would you wear this everytime? surely save it for special events?

Wow that's a pretty cool suit! I suspect that cost a few quid?! :)

In terms of wearing it to somewhere like Slimelight? Well Slimelight is pretty open minded and I have seen some pretty "out there" outfits.

There used to be a guy a long, long time ao who used to wear a full Boba Fett outfit which was cool, there is also a guy who occasionally wears full plate mail, so I don't think you would have any probelms getting in in your armour.

However these are rare occurrences, so I'm not saying you would "fit right in", but I honestly cannot see anybody giving you a hard time, if anything you'd probably get lots of "wow, that's cool" and people asking how it was made etc.

You might find though depending onwhat time of the year it is that you get a bit hot, Slimes doesn't have the best Air Con ever!

And I must admit, nothing could be weirder thatn the guy that used to come in the giant yellow Chicken Suit!!!

that's the most bitchin' armoured outfit i've seen since that crazy canadian man's trojan suit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPS2l5fQ55A)

Awesome, very nice :) I wasn't expecting anything that good before seeing the pics. I think it would be much more eye catching if the suit underneath were a brighter color, but that's just a suggestion.

Another idea. There are probably clubs/events that would pay you to attend. I know some of the Raves I used to attend had people dressed as silver robots, some on stilts.

Friend of mine wore storm-trooper (Star Wars not WWII) armour to Slimelight once. Basically it was a pain in the arse as he had to take his helmet off to talk to anyone and going to the toilet was a logistical nightmare. It also got very hot in there. The Boba Fett gear was easier to manage but still rather akward in a club environment.

Also, most hysterical moment last WGW when we watched Darth Vader mincing about trying to look menacing and accidentally banging his head on a low beam (wood, not laser) in The Shambles.

I would ask the UK Garrison lot as they're the main amateur costume wearers in the UK and a good proportion of them are alternative types (metallers, goths etc) who have been to clubs/festivals in armour.

Do it dude! That armour is sweeeeeeeeeeeet! :D

You might get a few people staring (as you'd probably expect), but tbh I think most people would give you respect for wearing it! And you'd definitely have a conversation starter right there! :)

As other people have said, we've had Boba Fett, a Storm Trooper, Hitler, a giant chicken, the incredible spinning Jesus (that guy was classic!) and many many others at Slime, so why the hell not!

and nothing more than that, i'd wager...
a bunch of pissed up islington socialites aren't exactly gonna go picking fights with what looks like robocop's badder more ninja cousin, now are they.

feck it, if i had one of those outfits, i'd find it hard not to wander around housing estates freakin' out the locals instead of hitting the areas nightclubs.

Most of the time, it look really nice on most people. I guess its the way the dress is able to bring out the grace of the lady wearing it. Just like cheongsam

It does look amazing, but what would be the point of wearing it to a club? Don't you go to a club to dance? You surely can't dance in that, and if you were waving your arms about it might be quite dangerous for everyone else, hehe :)
