View Full Version : A little bit rubbish / a little bit awesome...

it's time I gave the weekend a bit of a round-up... I must admit that a lot of the night falls into the first category, but I think it recovered (much) later on.

First off: I thought Modulate were good, but why so many guys on stage (and how many laptops do you need??) when the music is... I won't say 'generic' but, er.... a bit generic! Oh well, they put a lot of energy in and it was very enjoyable.

Most of the DJ'ing on the top floor for the first few hours was dull to say the least. *sigh* bring back the noise!! Am I the only one who thinks Matt C is boring? Sorry lad, but there's just no other word for it. I remember when I wouldn't go on the top floor becuase the music was too heavy for me.... but there must be something wrong when Firestarter (which I DO love, but....) is the heaviest and most interesting track of a set.

Simon's set was better, with some heavier tracks and even (OMFG) the occasional industrial beat in there (where did that come from??) but his mixing was terrible. At first I thought maybe he was having tech trouble, but now I think he was just having an off-night.

And a curiously FANTASTIC hour by (I am informed) Angus, with some great grimy, beat-driven choons, even though I couldnt' identify a lot of it.

And Mak had an awesome hour too (thank you SO MUCH for that Ministry track! That made the night!) including a great version of Alloy Mental's Fire!

So somehow, despite almost writing it off at the start, I think I boogied more than I have done in a long time! Still got a few aches, although my feet are always happier if I've been dancing rather than sitting still.

It was hot in there tho!

So, if it's not all night noise, it's boring? :p

I do distinctly remember there having been quite a bit of noise there, mixed in with the all the rest of the music.

I have to say that Angus' set was awesome, some good old school Industrial! It made such a nice change to hear some classic tracks that I recognised!

And yes despite the dreadful mixing Simon's set was pretty cool too.

The only thing I would say is that there was such a varied mix of stuff being played on that floor that I think people just stayed downstairs where it was more consistent, which is a shame as they missed some good stuff.

However I did notice that quite a few tracks were played both upstairs and downstairs, and sometimes quite close together.

And as for Modulate, not at all what I was expecting to be honest, I found them just a bit "Meh".

And all those muscly men in vests made them look like a f***ing boy band, LOL!

Come on, how many guys does it take to click a mouse on a laptop, LOL! ;)

Still I had a bloody good night, which turned into a bloody good rest of the weekend, so all in all not bad. But yeah, it did start off a bit slow....

It was a terribly boring night. And maybe I am missing something really obvious, but why did Modulate play a Prodigy track? We were a bit confused by that.

Glumness.

It was a "oh look, we know the synth riff from No Good, let's play that!" well done boys, now buzz off before I throw something at you! But then I'm not too keen on the original, but it was still better than a lot of what was played that night.

"It is commonplace for bands with little self written material of any worth to play "cover versions" of popular songs by other more successful acts."
This behaviour, especially prevalent amongst what many call garage bands, has been attributed to a mistaken belief that the concert attending public enjoy hearing their favourite songs butchered by less talented musicians than those responsible for the original piece.

So, they mopped the toilets too?

Aye, with the ends of their very baggy trousers.

Shortly after they got hit on the back of the head with a plastic cup.

Clearly they do not know the power of big slacks!

I completely agree, it was a crazy mix of a night.

I was at the pre-slime gig, which was strange. Pretty empty, though I enjoyed Leech Woman, as ever - and they seemed to have had a proper soundcheck this time, so no speakers cutting out like last time I saw them at electrowerkz. Hyper-active noise - brilliant.

Sheep on Drugs were a lot better than I thought they would be - they can put on a show when they want to - shame there were only about 50-60 people at the most.

The sound-check that you seemed to come in on, is what hit my night pretty hard. I can only presume that it was Stromkern - taking a whole hour for a sound-check, and this after there had been sound-checks all afternoon (at least I presume there were before the gig - in which all three bands used mixtures of guitars and samplers). Following this extended break, I hung around waiting for Stromk... at the time that they set themselves (1am). They eventually came on at 1:30ish. So let's see, we wait so long for a band, who (to my ears) every song sounded the same - and yes I stayed for 3 or 4 at the beginning and checked every now and then later and still same. Any one song was good, but... no doubt I'll be told to stay out of ebm-band reviews or something.

Oh well, - the night was saved by the slimelight DJs - especially top floor from 6 onwards, which woke me up again. The mix from Burning Inside to the next track (I have no idea what it was) was absolute genius.

As for the middle-floor dj's at 10:30 - not sure who it was, but I think that they played a great set. It was so crazily mixed to cater for noise, ebm,... to keep a lot of people happy whilst sound-check continued. I had been thinking of going home, so I must praise the middle-floor djs before midnight.
