its not always three floors at slime is it? when its 2 floors, which ones? ebm industrial or trad?

No, it's not always three floors - when it's a two-floor, it's the ground floor which isn't used. The middle floor is the 'goth' floor and the top level is the 'industrial' one...
Alexander

Technically it's a 2 floor Slimelight when the ground floor is used. It's just that it's rented out for a night other than Slimelight. When nobody wants to rent it out, that's when we get a 3-floor special!
Electrowerkz's loss is our gain, or something.
True!
.... but when it's a two floor night, you generally find EBM being played on both floors, but probably slightly more on the Goth floor.
Which is a shame because EBM sucks donkey cock :(
Pay no heed to the whingeing naysayer!!

Hmmmm not wishing to be a pedant ;),but EBM was a precursor to darkwave starting in the early 80s with bands like Nitzer Ebb and Front 242.Darkwave was the result of EBM getting diluted with gothic atmospheres.
There are very few bands now that stick to EBM (examples are Fixmer/Mccarthy/Spetsnaz/Dupont to name a few).
Flux:What is played on the middle floor at Slime has little in common with real EBM (save for a few examples early And One/Suicide Commando and Hocico are about the closest).
I'd say the middle floors playlist was heavier on the electro/trance/goth/futurepop side of things that EBM.

The terminology that seems to be used in the USA and some of mainland Europe for them is Futurepop but I personally hate that term so rarely use it.

I don't think that the term Ibiza Goth was meant to be taken literally (as in that clubs in San Antonio actually play it) more a comment on the asmosphere and style of the music.

Accadia - Into The Dawn

so...okay im confused...
what would any of you class as ebm and what as darkwave?
i agree that some of the 'ebm' (at least i think it is, im not so sure now)
has little to distinguish itself from stuff you find on hardhouse trance albums, but surely its a thin and debatable line...surely you cant class music as either one or the other, its always going to be subjective surely?
...on a final note - i love hocico and suicide commando, are these darkwave or ebm? and if they are ebm, does that make me an so called 'ibiza goth' Do people think that ebm is not really 'goth' at all, but a pikey version of darkwave...oh dear..
...im going to have a lie down now, the room is spinning....

what would any of you class as ebm and what as darkwave?
Personally I'd term bands like Nitzer Ebb and F242 EBM,I'd always considered Darkwave to be a kind of "electro-goth" if you will (Blutengel etc.)
i agree that some of the 'ebm' (at least i think it is, im not so sure now)

I'm pretty sure that traditional EBM tracks would only make it onto a hardhouse comp in a remixed (more often than not) speeded up version.

I'd say that those bands have more in common with EBM so I don't think that makes you an Ibiza Goth ;) (I'd say that makes you closer to a rivethead than an Ibiza Goth ;)).But like you say it's all subjective.

Not at all.I could not care less but if people insist on labelling things then at least do it right ;)
Rivetmike
Okay, so Futurepop it is then!
We bow to Mike's superior knowledge on this subject!!
However, if you talk to most of Slimelight's staff & punters, they're gonna say something along the lines of: "What the fuck are you talking about?" They all know this shit as EBM. They even call the third floor an EBM floor! Yes, it is "uplifting Goth" if that indeed is not too much of an oxymoron in itself!! lol ... and indeed it could be related to the Ibiza thing.
Anyhows ... my point is this ... I think to dismiss what we know as EBM (actually Futurepop) as all crap, is a narrow minded way of viewing a genre of music that we all listen to every week at Slime. There are crap tunes at Slime for sure, but to label a whole genre?
I don't worship EBM (Futurepop), but it is quite entertaining in not too large doses. I even play some Apop when I play in other clubs. Most of the "mainstream" (eurgh, don't like that term!) DJs just miss it and it goes down a storm!!
Anyways ... nuff sed!

I agree, it doesnt matter what genre it is at all - and yeah, 'ibiza goth' is an interesting one, could the inventor of this term be predicting a new trend towards tiny tops and goggles - oh i mean sunshades? (hang on...sounds familiar!)

I agree with you.I have not labelled it as crap and will not do so.Just because most of it is not to my taste does not mean there isn't a place for it (hell,I'll admit to liking a few Icon Of Coil tunes and they sure as hell fall into that category).

Real EBM is bands like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Portion Control, Bigod 20, Orange Sector. It was more popular in the early eighties and was dreamt up in Belgium. Nowadays there are bands who keep the spirit of EBM alive but with 21st century production (bands like Spetsnaz, Militant Cheerleaders On The move, CAP). It's no longer a popular sound in general but a few bands and labels are keeping it alive.
It's very strict in tempo and beat, almost sounds like electronic military music (for want of a better description). Vocals are often simple and come across more as political sloganerring than tales of lost love or the sands of time shifting (bleurgh ;)).
Unfortuantely most of what you will hear Slimelight regulars term EBM is either dark electro (Suicide Commado, Hocico etc.) or future pop (VNV, Assemblage 23 etc.).
And there I was trying NOT to sound like a genre Nazi..... ;)
