The ongoing development of camden town station still looks set - I think - to result in the closure of the ballroom to be converted into a giant Gap superstore (well, not quite, but you know what I mean).

What does everyone think about this? Is the ballroom an important part of one londons most vibrant subcultures, or is just the dive to end all dives where 13 yr olds can go to get pissed on snakebite?

Or am i just talking out of my arse?

No way! You're not talking out your arse! I definitely think it should be left there. As you say, it IS on of London's most vibrant subcultures. Maybe a a demo should be held! :? 8O (just an idea, but probably not a good one! Or a petition!) :? hmmmmm.....

I used to enjoy the ballroom a lot when I was younger but not anymore.I find it so boring and full of tourists.Although I wouldn't like it to die because of development.

There is indeed a campaign to stop the closure of the Ballroom and other parts of the market so if you'd like to do something about it from the comfort of your computer chair go to....

and register your objection.

Is this definate then? There have been rumours around for a few years that the Ballroom would be lost to London Underground?

When is it likely to close? :(

According to http://www.camdenlock.co.uk/ctstation.htm, Mayor Ken objected but has now "accepted their plans in principle". London Underground are now trying to get compulsory purchase orders to turf everyone out.

This whole thing seems to be a pretty cynical attempt to make a lot of money by railroading the deal through in the name of "public transport", when actually most of the development is nothing to do with the new Tube station. LUL's justification is that it needs to make shed-loads of money off nice shiny shops to pay for the station. It's interesting that they didn't feel the need to bulldoze other parts of London and turn them into "desirable retail premises" when creating the Jubilee line...

The Ballroom, for all its ups & downs, has been a fun place for most people. Its biggest plus is that huge dancefloor - you really get some space to move. I went there for the first time in ages last Friday, and was very pleasantly surprised at the improvement in the music and change in the clientele. More goths, fewer tourists, darker sounds, less techno. I guess we'd better make the most of it; it may not last.

Well said there really room to dance and the floor does't fuck up your shoes. Plus is another option to go out will be sad if it closes down  .
