It is a great film, i'll give you that.
Maybe its overlooked since those people in the establishment didn't get it: its not that hard to understand, but it does do strange things to your head. As we all know the word unconventional tends to be interchangeable with overlooked...
But take heart... look where it is in the top rated movies of all time (http://us.imdb.com/top_250_films) at IMDb.

I like a wide variety of films. A list might do it:
Clockwork Orange
Pride & Prejudice *cringe* SOOOO not goth, baby.
Gia (great film, LOVE Angelina in everything she does... the lesbian action is top class too)
Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon (in order of decline. Red Dragon doesn't QUITE follow the book, so it loses popularity points)
The Last Unicorn (animated, but nonetheless)
I would write The Crow but... :?
Schindler's List, Conspiracy, anything that tells of WWII
That reminds me- a GREAT book: House Of Dolls. I can't quite recall the author's name as it is not actually given. Instead, it is Ka-Tzetnik 899 something, basically the number they were branded with in a ghetto in Warsaw, Poland. The author recounts the experiences of a 14-year-old Jewish girl, Daniella Preleshnik, in the ghetto AND in a brothel set up for the German armed forces. READ IT. Anyway, I'm all done now.

Pulp Fiction- Brilliantly made and put together and one of the best casts in a film ever.

Agreed... Bad Boy Bubby is an absolutely amazing film, i saw it on the telly few years ago and was cracking up with laughter not to mention a little taken aback by it's crazy plot and situations of Bubby both at home with his mad mother and in the real world.
Annoying thing is i can't get hold of a copy of this film anywhere, it doesn't seem to be available at any shops, and has still not yet been repeated on t.v.... :( damn.. i wish i recorded it when i had the chance, but who could have imagined what this film would be like?

As far as I know the DVD that was released in Germany was the only uncut version. That's what they claimed on some webpages that compared all released versions.
Cuts were made at the rape scene. Another cut I can think for the UK is violence against nipples in the bank. And the scene in the dessert where one guy is run over by a truck. ( but I don't know for sure, since I haven't seen a cut version)
By the way his film " El dia de la Bestia" is excellent as well 8) :) 8)

is that the remake of batttle royale? with all due respect to hollywood, i have a feeling its going to suck. battle royale isnt a hugely dialogue film obviously, but the thought of horny teenage american dialogue kills me. i cant imagine theyl pull it off well. why remake something when the original kicked arse?
or of course, u cud be talking about a sequel. in which case il shut up and go sit in the corner
SeanH
07-01-2004, 02:15 PM
I assume they mean the sequel, since remakes are usually simply given the same name rather than having a number added. Didn't know there was to be a remake. The sequel does indeed look very good, though I've only seen the trailer in Japanese (of which I speak not a word).

Out of all the films I have seen recently one I'd recommend is Secretary.
James Spader stars as a lawyer who takes on a new secretary who is straight out of the loony bin (but is she really mad....or just a bit different).
Well things spice up quite a bit for the both of them at work as this develops into quite an unconventional lovestory.
A film about fetishes done in an adult manner (manages to not snigger behind it's hand at the characters),is really sexy (well I think so) with no nudity and darkly comic.
Go watch

ok, heres a short list of recent highlights
-monsterman -> ultracheesy and ultraviolent american horror-comedy, great stuff
-lost in translation -> slow, but very effective.. bill murray rocks!
-dirty pretty things -> what? a love story set against a backdrop of illegal organ-traficing in the seedy underworld of london? strangely uplifting
-rules of attraction -> the dark side of american pie, american teens killing and raping themselves and puking on each other and taking drugs.. dreams are made of this shit. watch it!
-bowling for columbine -> any movie that takes a complete piss out of americans scores in my book.
-thirteen -> more dysfunctional american teens
-kite -> great anime, check out the velvet acid christ samples
-requiem for a dream -> can't leave this one out of any top movie list even tho seen it like a 100 times.
-kung pow -> 'my finger points'.. do not take hallucogens and watch this movie, you'll be scarred for life
this could go on 4 a while, so i think i'll stop now...

True, and while I agree that they're all fantastic to watch, only Armor of God has the outtake where a stunt goes drastically wrong & Jackie falls quite a great distance, through a load of branches and busts up his neck & back, almost ending his career & his life :(

I'm not even going to try & explain what this film was about. All you need to know is if you like action and crazy Japanese sylised action at that, you'll love it. It looked like it could've been a Capcom game thru a lot of the film, which was no bad thing. The action sequences were fantastc with top fighting & destruction, and the CG was really quite amazing too.
Story-wise, well, I don't think there was a single person in the cinema that understood it! Buddhist_Insect & I decided it's one to watch when you're very "unsober" and make up your own plot tbh.
A highly entertaining film and well worth a watch.

How good was Ben Kingsley in this, SP????!!!
Scared the shit out of me in a way I would never imagine 'Gandhi' could!
Can't remember ever seeing much 'hard-man' acting of this calibre.

Tokyo Godfathers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388473/) - cute Christmassy Japanese animation movie about a hapless trio of homeless people who find an abandoned baby and their adventures as they attempt to re-unite it with its parents
The Machinist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/) - slight headfuck movie, kind of a cross between Memento and American Psycho (also starring Christian Bale, who rocks my socks)
Casshern (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405821/) - if it hasn't been mentioned already - movie adaptation of the 70s manga "Casshan". Wild story, hard to follow unless you're familiar with the original manga, but some of the most breathtaking and original action sequences you've ever seen. Worth watching, even if you remain confused throughout the film.
2046 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212712/) - Very weird Chinese love story, the sequel to "In The Mood For Love" (which you don't need to have seen to watch this). Beautiful cinematography with a dark and compelling take on romance vs sex
Touching The Void (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408144/) - Re-inactment of a contraversial mountain climbing incident involving two young British mountaineers in the 80s. Gripping story, and a reasonably accurate depiction of the actual events.

The Manchurian Candidate (Damn fine remake!)
Batman ("insert original Batman cheese here" Its the 1966 original, what can I say :D )

Waiting to watch:

"Alexander" may not have been in the same league as "Gladiator" and other such masterpieces but it had its moments. I can't say I was bothered by the lack of Jolie in every scene, but then again I'm female and straight :P

Agree with you on 'Saving Private Ryan' LOL. After the first superb 30 minutes, it went precisely fucking nowhere, and went there V-E-R-Y bloody slowly too.....
'Alexander' should have been a truly great movie, Oliver Stone directing, a compelling historical figure with which to set out a truly epic film, but it just didnt work. Macedonians having Irish accents was just STOOOOOOOOOPID, Colin Farrel was just plain wrong in the main role, the whole 'is he/isnt he having a gay relationship?' thing was just crap, just get on with actually showing it, or leave it alone and the script was pretty awful. A totally wasted opportunity.
Not as bad as John Wayne as Genghis Khan, but definitely on a par.....

Saving Private Ryan made me want to slowly eviscerate myself just so I wouldn't have to suffer through the awful "plotline" any longer. Or maybe it's just my burning hatred for Matt Damon and Tom Hanks :P
Haha, not a John Wayne fan then? Granted, he was a bit too tall to be Genghis Kahn but, let's face it, it was him or Errol Flynn :P
I agree that Colin Farrell was wrong for the lead role. I think Russell Crowe would have made a better Alexander, or possible Ralph Fiennes. Someone with a real command of the screen. As to the gay relationship, I think that was played down a bit because gay relationships were so commonplace in Greece at the time. Haven't you ever watched Spartacus? ;) I think Alexander had all the makings of a great film, for the reasons you stated. Admittedly, it didn't live up to its potential, but I don't think it was as bad as everyone makes out. I personally enjoyed the final battle very much.
Now, if you'd like to try an absolutely woeful film, you should watch Hitch *shudders*

I think I read somewhere that Alexander was a rampant homosexual, so he probably had many, many gay relationships. However, the film was designed to target as wide an audience as possible, and a lot of the public are still uncomfortable with the idea of watching two blokes get physical on screen. I expect that is why it was tip-toed around. Just look at Troy, there wasn't even an allusion to anyone being gay, eventhough most of them probably batted for both sides. Incidently, I think Alexander was much better than Troy. Achilles was just too awesome all the time, its hard to empathise with "perfect" people!

There were zombies, aliens, rock and roll, Guitar Wolf, some strange looking pimpmeister wearing disturbing hotpants and carrying a grenade launcher...and of course lots of explodey head death among the utter carnage.

'City of lost Children', visual confectionery, absolutely delicious. I also watched the rather recent Asian horror film called 'The DollMaster'... it was a bit dry, the storyline was lacking..
I still have atleast ten more movies to watch, all of which I bought last week in London. Arriving home again last night was quite depressing in the way that I suffer from the Reykjavik blues (i.e. the realisation that there is nothing here at all)..

I might also mention that I saw the movie 'unleashed' last June, then dubbed 'Danny the Dog'. It's pretty good fight- and actionwise, but don't expect too much in the Luc Besson department. I have the feeling that it's been edited in the light of the altered title.. I found it funny that it still hadn't even been premiered in England!

It's done and dusted, gets weird towards the end and the first season does finish on a cliff hanger of sorts.... Season 2 starts in the US next month, so at least a year before we see it.

RivetmikeA very gritty film. Very matter-of-fact in dealing with murder, rape & fairly hard-core sex. Some great French tunes in it too! (which surprised me)
Yep ... enjoyed it ... a refreshing change! lol ... very different to the way the UK or Hollywood deals with making a film ... perhaps this is the way things should be, I'm sick of being told what I can & can't watch ... it should be our choice!!

Theres always a few irresponsible prats who manage to spoil it for everyone by getting their latest killing spree blamed on whatever horror they have been watching that week.
If as a society we were made to be responsible for our own actions then censorship wouldn't be a problem.
If you have not already seen it SP try Irreversible next :)

Local black comedy called 'Strákarnir okkar' (our boys) about the star of a football team coming out and announcing he's gay. He gets kicked off the team and starts playing with "Pride united" instead. I felt it was a sort of Full Monty ripoff..
The best point of the movie must have been when my friend had his face pasted over the whole screen from a news shot of the gay-pride parade from two years ago.. *snk* ^^

Hmm, that's encouraging about 'Crash' - since they named a movie after me, I thought I ought to go and see it, but the publicity didn't really make it look very good....
I still want to see 'Dukes of Hazzard' for reasons of pure nostalgia.
I went to see 'The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D' at the weekend. Pretty poor, unless you're under 10, but that's about what I expected anyway.
Recently, I've also seen 'Herbie - Fully Loaded', which was fun. They'd used modern CGI effects to give Herbie a lot more expression than he ever used to have. Purists will no doubt say that's a bad thing.
'Madagascar' was remarkably unremarkable.
Can you tell I've been looking after my kids a lot over the summer? :D

A Hole In My Heart
From IMDB:
"Just when you think that the film has done everything it can to shock and disgust you ... it gets worse ! Thinking about scenes in isolation, they shouldn't be too bad - but I guess it's the whole development of the characters that make events so disturbing.
The director was on stage afterwards (London Film Festival) and said that he thought there were something like 68 different messages in the film, but wouldn't expand on any of them, and wouldn't answer questions about why he had blanked out all the logos - other than to confirm that he had done it on purpose. He also claimed that he didn't understand the film himself, and that he would much prefer to be making children's movies rather than this type of film.
Before the film he had predicted that 9% of the audience would walk out during the film - he seemed pleased that the dropout rate was lower than expected !
Worth seeing, if you like being made to feel uncomfortable"
Yeah, it did make me feel a little uncomfotable in places.....

I went to see A Hole in my Heart, completely oblivious of it's content.. I hadn't really been keeping up with the whole media fiasco that was on about it, and well, lets just say I won't be seeing it again. D:
I did however venture to see Charlie and the Chocolate factory at the theatres, again, despite the murderous prices of tickets. I'm happy to announce that I found it was even better than the first time, not to mention the EXTREMELY juicy trailer for the Corpse Bride that was shown before the movie..

I hear that they are remaking the "Thing"
Can't wait.....
*ponders*
While a remake of the Thing could be one of the best things ever (no pun intended), it's unfortunately likely to end up paling in comparison to the original.
Past experiences dictate that remakes of classics end up unfit to clean the boots of the original (of course there ARE exceptions to this), there'll be no Kurt Russell, instead they'll probably opt for someone rubbish (Jude bloody Law or something), and there'll be lots of computer generated special effects, which, generally speaking, can look pony.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Thing...I'm just a pessimist ;)

Agree, another hollywood remake likely to fuck it up totally... and another remake while on the subject which has already been done is " The Fog" , no Jamie Lee this time round

Reiver party anyone?
I'm currently "watching" Fahrenheit...well, I say watching. I'm playing Fahrenheit. Tis a PS2 game in the interactive movie mould, only this time they've actually got it spot on...none of this namby pamby shit.
It's a gritty psychological horror/thriller with top graphics, animation, interaction and best of all a wikkid plot.
So far it's already made me jump a few times and is more than just a little bit freaky! Am loving it :)

Ah, yes. In order to do well these days, all films must have a hot woman on the poster, preferably holding one or more swords, knives or automatic weapons. Double the popularity if she's wearing rubber or leather.

How I managed to watch so many films since sunday morning is a mystery to me but there you go...
Casshern (Japanese-2hours and 21 min of awsome images and soundtrack)
Open your eyes (Spanish-NOT Vanilla Skies, pleeeease!)
28 days later(BRIT!!!!)
Dolls (Another japanese...)
A Chinese Ghost Story :)(Chinese,... of course)
Life is beautiful(Italian)
Enjoy them if you can if you are (like me) utterly bored of Hollywood crap or have(again like me) a soft spot for European and specially for Far Eastern cultures...
