Got in on PPV recently and it badly sufferes from too much build up not enough death. Nice vengeance ratio though it has to be said.
Three things stood out that I liked:
1. Nice 'Friday the 13th' based musical score.
2. Nice doff of the cap to 'Pet Cemetary' with the heel cuts.
3. Nice doff of the cap to 'Texas Chainsaw' with the saw drop:

Still more gore was needed.

I thought it was a major let down tbh. As you say, soooo much build up, but it was all for nowt really. Those effects weren't very special (more laughable!), and it was all a bit...well...pony!
From what I'd read about it I was expecting some naaasty gore for the finalé, but again, nowt but disappointment. Ah well.

I enjoyed it, but again, it was a let down compared with the hype.
And personally, I was very disappointed in the ending, far too American and tidy!

Hmmm, we've just got it, but haven't seen it yet...I'm now 'managing my expectations'. I don't see how it can possibly be as gorey as Saw III though.

There is not much gore. The gore thay have is class but there is not enough.
Whats all this story bollocks about?
I just need gore and a vague story.

was disappointed too, the first half an hour was pointless, the characters were badly developed and the few good gore scenes didn't make it up.
My hopes are now on Saw III hehe

I saw Saw III last night. It's a lot better than the hack n slash predictability of SawII. More of the psychological game play that made the first one so interesting. And the slaughter house scene. Urgh!

So why not make a Saw 3 thread?

I saw Hostel at the weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. There was gore, but it (mostly) wasn't gratuitous. A lot of the movie was suspense and psychological horror which (IMHO) is far more horrific. Perhaps if I'd been expecting great things, I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much?
See, now I wouldn't have said that there was any real psychological horror involved in Hostel...more of a drawn out wait for nothing to really happen. But then maybe that's just me (and G, and Rivetmike & Bezerkangel...think we pretty much all managed a little snooze at some point during the film too! lol)

I think you may have been instrumental in my not expecting too much, which led to me enjoying the film ;)
Hehe, trudat. Altho we didn't really expect anything much from it...but as it turns out, all we got out of it was some bubbas.

Much like the directors first full blown horror feature film effort Cabin Fever...
It sucked.
Effects - Wicked
Story/plot/ - lacking.
