I thought it was good in it's own right but of the ones who've seen both versions most of my friends say it wasn't a patch on the Jap original. I liked em both!

i'm with you bud,i actually enjoyed the remake.ring 2 is out in september, followed by the ju-on and dark water remakes!then tom cruise is directing the 'eye'remake... i think it says alot when the yanks are basically just remaking classics or foreign films.saying that i LOVED the dawn of the dead and texas chainsaw massacre remakes.i'm not too much of a purist, as long as a film's good.
check out hideo nakata's dark water- he directed ringu, and you'll see similarities all the way through. ironically he's directing the us ring 2!!!!
also bangkok haunted is quite good (although obviously not japanese), the eye is a good craic and chinese ghost story, although this is less of a horror.i'm trying to get a copy of junk, spiral and tomie...my ju-on turned up last week. check www.cultjapanesedvd.com for dirt cheap imports (12 quid for battle royale 2, pand p is a quid)

Not bad, but only if you have a multi-region DVD player. The DVD on offer is Region 3.

A friend of mine went to the B R II premiere and said it was a disappointment. Nowhere near as good as the original.

Not seen the sequel myself although like your friends there have been so many critics slating this movie because, unlike the first film, there wasn't really much focus on plot as it was more about shock value with tons, and I mean TONS, of gore (apparently). I'd still like to see it but if it's true what the critics say about the lack of plot I may be disappointed too. Plot is pretty important to me.
