I think that there's an interesting exhibition about subversive surrealism at Hayward Gallery. I haven't been there (i'm far away!), but today I've translate something about it and it sounds really good.

I went there before, pretty neat stuff, though quality varies from fantastic pieces of fine art into silly scribblings of three-year olds.

Yup, me and Byakhiam went to that one together one morning after Slimelight. I thought it was pretty amazing, but that's right up my street. You'd like it too, but I warn you, you could probably get that much entertainment for less money at the Tate Modern (free), and various low price theatre and films.

Otherwise, definitely recommended, though maybe a bit heavy for that time on a Sunday!

lol! that'll be miro!..it amazes me that someone can have their work exhibited purely because it looks like the doodlings of a child.?!

his drawings might be a bit cockeyed misproportionate and a bit cute in the badly drawn sense-as a child might draw but he knew he was doing it!

a 3 year old doesnt know any better!!

this is what art should try to avoid! not encourage!

this is where it all started to get a bit silly. No longer will we create gorgeous potraits spending as much money as possible on them with the finest materials painting these masterpieces which may take years to complete but this is where it we try and do something so different and so innovative that crap is created!

but 'oh no,its not crap..its art!' because we havent seen this kind of crap presented as art before!

its this kind of wonky thinking which spawned conceptualism which gave us an unmade bed, half a formaldehyded farm and made some individuals far too fucking rich for their own good!

...although i kinda like damien hirsts static animals admittedly lol-at least theres something to look at there..and not a stategically placed mess!

i think theyve got it wrong,i think the point in these cases that should be considered art is not the idea of the work or the work itself but the fact these people are taking everyone for a ride...and getting stinking rich doing it!

and the fact that most people either 1)-dont notice
2)-dont care
3)-just give them more money!

But anyway- i really like batailles work so im going to have to go to the exhibition! ;)

Well... I think that things are not so simple. First of all, it’s really difficult to become rich working as an artist, in fact, is quite difficult earning money with art, so if you want to be a millionaire you don’t doodle like a child. If people like Miro are so famous is because they broke all the rules of traditional art and open the way to new forms of thinking.
It’s true that sometimes you see works of art that seem really stupid and nonsense or just outrageous for the sake of it. I think that the main problem is that everybody understand a beautiful painting, but conceptual art and contemporary art are much more complicated because artists usually play with intellectual and philosophical ideas related to postmodernism and things like that, not just with beautiful portraits or landscapes, so sometimes you don’t understand what they mean. I’m not saying that you must be an intellectual to understand ‘modern crap’, just that it’s easy to appreciate a beautiful landscape than a strange minimal sculpture…

It really is that simple!

We have reached a point that everything in the art world as been done before-it is impossible to do something entirely radical nowdays purely because someone else has already done it!
Everything is influenced by something else-so even if you dont doodle like a child there will probably be someone out there matching your talent and level of drawing ability.

Yes you're right the reason Miro is such a championed artist is that he is one of the people who broke the rules but he chose to actually learn the rules first. If this wasnt neccessary we could just exhibit the work of an actual child up in a museum!

He's a lot like picasso as they both are fabulous classical painters but they chose to subvert the normalities of painting in their own unique ways and stray away from painting the usual still lifes etc-thats what makes them good!

Il tell you the reason you think conceptualism is hard to relate to and understand! Its because all those galleries out there choose only to buy one piece of the work because its all so god damn expensive!

Theres no point buying the whole collection with no guarentee any punters will actually want to view it!

So this leaves the average joe walking in to a museum seeing a big glass brick and deciding they dont like it.Of course this is going to happen!

who the hell can relate to a brick with maybe a few lines of writing telling them how it represents all the pain and misery in the world?

In an ideal world the galleries would buy the whole collection from the artists in question. This is like buying the whole storybook as opposed to just buying the end 2 pages.

But this is not possible! apart from the cost it would leave galleries with just a few massive exhibits detailing the artists and their work to the core. But this would only cater for a select minority of the public. So they have to compromise and buy a tiny bit of everything to introduce society to all the different kinds of work out there,so the can each decide what they like and look into it further.
