View Full Version : Dressing up or "weekend alternative"

What is with people only looking alternative when going out? Of course no-one would dress in alternative way when going to work, but when dressed casually, blue jeans and other boring 'mainstream' wear seems to be the rule of the day. Why?

cos it's comfy?
i wear my hair almost the same way that i do for slimes, when i am at work.... i just don't put the blue gel in or the cyber-hair....
but the hair is up in a bun with the braids trailing out of the middle of it.. lol
sometimes i'll wear a dane top on a day off it depends on my mood. plus, a lot of my outfits that i wear to slimes are a tad revealing for a daytime trip to tesco's.... *giggles*

pfft, you pair o'pussies. Go to tescos a-dressed up. I find I'm more colourful at Slimes than during the normal monday to friday, so it's got to be a good thing.
That's what Sundays at least are for... the "I've fallen out of a nightclub and I'm fending off sleep" look. Complete with goggly eyes covered up with huge shades.

Getting dressed up specially to go to a particular event is kind of a several-thousand-year-old tradition now.
Nobody says, why don't you wear that wedding dress to go to Sainsburys?
Albeit I do know a few people who have been shopping in Sainsburys in a wedding dress (especially at Whitby) but that's besides the point.

Depends what you mean by dressing up when I was a young gothling
I was lucky I worked in a record shop so I could dress pretty much the way I wanted! When I was younger I was much more flamboyant my hair was very very long and crimpedAnd I had a strange penchant for wearing leather bib and braces(sounds very butch!!),these days everything I buy seems to come from surplus store(I wonder why????)and yes apart from the cross strap
and my penchant for my nice tweed trousers I do dress pretty similar most of the time!

Why?
Because of the uniform/suit culture, that all low-rung workers dress in uniforms provided by the company and higher ups have to wear suits. ;)

needless to say that tescos has seen me (and best friend in same uniform) all dressed up in gear, iron cross and all getting a sarnies, roses, milk, bread, all sorts..
i am normally not dressed in a corset or cross strap but i have gone to work in my pleated skirt, black shirt and tie... even had a dodgy tie pin in it and dont think my work mates did not know what they meant ;) i work with some very informed military historians

You can get away with more than you think if you have the balls to try it. For me it's usually lack of time, but a shirt short enough at the back to show off my tattoo is fun...
I'm lucky that I can half do my cyber hairdo as well. like I said, it's a great response for those who complain about too much black!!
Iron crosses, huh? Well I would but I don't think they'd go down too well at the synagogue.
Challenge for tomorrow at work, kiddies!

heheh prolly not but then again they are ww1 repros, they dont have a swastika on them and iron crosses had been awarded in ww1 to plenty of jews. in fact they have been around for much longer than that even...

I have gone to work before in full trad stuff, i.e big frilly shirt, very pointy boots, brocade trews and cloak over the top, (ok, it was Hallowe'en last year and we were expected to be dressed up.)
It just wasn't very practical. Every time I walked down the shop my cloak took nearly everything with it. By lunchtime my feet were killing me.... I did get a lot of compliments though.
I am lucky though in that if I can wear anything I want for work except jeans. I'm nearly always in black anyway...
Apart from that, I'd spend most of the day trying to decide what to wear and I'd never get anything done!

I normally wear for Slimelight what I would wear for work. I'm not the most "dressy" person though and that normally consists of combats/leathers and whatever band t-shirt is nearest in the morning. Like Keef used to, I work in a record shop so they are probably a bit more lenient...

Hmmm, you know your history, but I know my semiotics.
I'd just prefer to upset 'em with my tatt, because that's not allowed either. (nice to feel proper rebellious occasionally!)
problem with dressing up generally is there are so many teen emos here, who live for sitting outside the Virgin Megastore looking depressed, with enough eyeliner to sink a ship. I really, really don't want to be associated with them.
But a little bit of deviance every day can make life more interesting.

When I was at my lowest, I often used to put my war-paint (full make-up) on and dress up, for a trip into Chelmsford. It helped me to feel confident enough to do it. The reactions were quite amusing, too. Clothes-wise, I usually wear fairly alternative stuff (except for work, where the dress-code precludes it).
He he ... I've been most places in my Slime garb (both types) ... but even if I'm being lazy or getting ready ultra quick, I like to put on something that I haven't been wearing all week because then I feel as though I'm going out! ;)

I honestly dont own any blue jeans! I dont dress strongly alternatively all week when Im around and about etc, I cant afford to! Its just nice to wear something nice on the weekend for going out. During the week I dont really care what clothes I wear, just usually black baggies and a T. Its comfortable, its black, its cheap, I can arse around in it and it doesnt matter if it gets ruined. I could wear my going out gear for work, but it would be ruined in seconds, really not practical at all. Getting a cool new work uniform (ish) in a months time, look out for some pics :p

Well, I work with my Mum (she owns Best Balloons, which is a Wedding Decorating service/Online Party Shop) and I wear what I would wear to slimes or concerts everyday.
Had no complains, just friendly comments and people asking where I buy them from as they love them.
I have my hair how I want and I keep my piercings in...
but I enjoy going to Tesco's dressed up in my clubbing gear =] Makes me the center of attention, even more so *giggles*

LOL speaking of tesco's, when i was off work recovering with the knee I was not washing the blue gel outta my hair straight away, and forgetting a day or so later when I went out that I still had blue hair... was getting lots of attention, wondered why, then realised!
Plus with the Dane top on i was getting some right odd looks... but who gives a toss, eh?
My retail job means that anything remotely interesting in terms of hair has to be temporary, though for work despite needing plain black trousers and black trainers I still manage to wear cyberdog trousers and swear shoes! Though they are the most dull designs they have... *sigh*
We can't all work in camden!
(there are other options i'm aware, but changing my job just so I can look more 'alternative' is silly, i've had many a uber goth patronise me because I don't live, work and breath camden)
As for everyday wear I don't have a single pair of blue jeans or trainers, in fact my entire wardrobe is black with the odd splash of blue, green or red. When i'm not at work my non-alternative friends find my attention to detail (aka vanity) in my day outfits amusing, 'two colours! always two colours!' because it's always black and either blue, green or red.
People actually ask me 'so what's your cyber colour?' And then I noticed, the uber cybers actually do only stick to one colour!?
Basically I have my daytime alternative stuff, and then I have my clubbing alternative stuff... you need to have a difference really otherwise going out isn't quite as fun if you don't feel a bit more dressed up as usual!
Dunno what you lot are talking about, I only have one outfit cos I can only afford the one. When that falls apart I'll replace it with an identical one. You don't see Father Christmas or Superman or Jesus or Mickey Mouse changing costumes all the time and it would be easier for them due to the fact that they're fictional!!!

I have noticed that too. My first Cyber friend Cassi (who introduced me to the whole style) only wears Black and Green.
Mikey only wears Black, Blue and accasionally Silver and White. Tom normally only wears White. Daisy wears Blue, accasionally with Pink or Black.
Anyone know why this is?

Well, from a financial point of view at least it's easier to stick to one colour. It also looks better, no contest, if you're just combining black with one colour other than silver/white which go with everything. Too many colours looks okay on some people, but it's just not as slick.
Wow, as I'm being all shallow by even talking about this stuff, I just want to add that I try, occasionally to do other colours (I have green/orange, red and fluro pink as secondary colours) but I have more blue than anything (mostly through lifting ribbons/fabrics from a previous employer) so I tend to stick to that!
Colour co-ordination makes all the difference when you're as vain as hell... sorry about that!

So, I only wore Pink and Blue and White with my Dread Extentions. And Black and White with my Foam Extentions.
But I couldn't only wear one colour. It would be SO boring, well it would to me. Although the outfit would be different...it would be boring.

Yeah well, boring is as boring does.
So apart from your hair, what else do you have to talk about. I've seen your myspace and it hardly makes me want to have a conversation with you.
Still, tell me again about your extensions. I'm sure there's a whole philosophy in there that's just about to make it onto the national curriculum.

I encountered this "cyber colour" thing last sunday too, when I overheard a friend of mine say that blue is his cyber colour. Single colour can be boring, but two colours is already well and good and I can reach two colours just by dressing in all-black, since it's then already black and white (skin). Admittely I tend to like pieces of metal and some whites and reds in my outfit as well. But then again, I very much think that I don't dress boringly. :D

eek! I have no idea what my cyber-colour is... maybe its paisley  god I just hope it's not pink.
On a similar note I pretty much turned into slimes in what I work in (semi office gear) the other week, felt weird yet strangely comfortable except under the UV and more people seemed 'friendlier' than normal...
Anyways Id argue one colour is actually the more expensive option... taking into account boots and all it's kind of a look that drips cash unless it's a paper suit.

Just thought I'd add my two cents on the fact that some people seem to talk about nothing but hair and make-up. That's not very alternative way to live your life. Go home, watch Big Brother and read Heat Magazine if that's all that you have to contribute.

the phenomenon is quiet bizarre images of needles and even wearing them in hair yet show them a pick ready to go and they would run a mile or step over rather than help out a guy who had OD’ed… :/
Ah reminds me...the last time I saw the prodigy... lots of 'nice kids' bopping with keith up the front making all the movements as though he were injecting something, again and again, it was all very sad. He did however have a very good stylist or whoever dresses him did very well for a while back there.

I think that you lot are being harsh with her for no reason!
She has her point and is just following a conversation! Why go hard on her for doing this? The thread/subject was started by someone else. She even never asked what she could possibly do to look well, cos she seems to have an idea of how to do it, regardless if we like it or not.
She has never been rude here, never slagged anyone, she has NEVER talked about Big Brother and from what I have seen, wrote about different subjects.
I have not really participated much on this thread but I have read it from the beginning, the same way I am addicted to reading all the posts that are going on on this forum. This thread is just kind of a relax your mind thing... Do not think much and talk about the way you look and want to look.
Some people do not write anything really relevant-like me- and just get away with it. We spam the forum we senseless and dull posts and everyone is happy.
Dressing up on weekends(and for some everyday) is an art for lots of people that shows and can be extremely pleasant to see. This does not imply that this people do not have anything else to think or talk about. They just like to look good and feel good. And most of us can easily be included in that lot.
Dressing is a way of expression. Even if you "only" wear a t-shirt and trousers you are already saying something about yourself.
I am one of those who enjoys complimenting people if I like how they look. Because of the effort and also because as I said, I find it an art. Originality is hard to find and I like it.
Why become fascist and cut someone's wings when they are creating a little art out of their appearance??

Hey, taking the time to dress up for clubbing is not shallow by any means... I wouldn't have a dig at that at all, trust me, it takes me hours! And my slur of Big Brother was just an example of what "normal" (or whatever the opposite of goth/alternative/whatever is) people indulge in when they're not talking about this person's hair and this person's weight (yeah, I know you didn't say that either).
Just sometimes, some club/forum regulars reveal that they spend way too much of their energy looking a particular way, and sticking with people who look a particular way, being aloof, wasted and boring, and need to get out more. Or maybe stay in more. There is actually More. To. Life.

Though trying to maintain an air of mystery whilst giggling your head off doesn't conjour up the right kind of image does it?

Yeah ... I knew trouble said she was a girl, but on a public forum that doesn't necessarily mean that it is so.
You are so damn right...
I felt in the piege!! ;)
So many people believe what is written on forums and... Owls are not what they look like!
Now, making that affirmation about the leather trousers does not mean anything neither. A gay guy could write it!
Mystery, mystery...:)
True, but there are other clues there, so I'm pretty certain!

I'm curious now, what other clues led you to believe that I am telling the truth?
(which I am, easy to say, but it *IS* true!)

What is with people only looking alternative when going out? Of course no-one would dress in alternative way when going to work, but when dressed casually, blue jeans and other boring 'mainstream' wear seems to be the rule of the day. Why?
Recently in the heatwave i've been dressing down as Slimes is a long haul and it's HOT HOT HOT in there all night! Especially if you're dancing a lot too.
