Despite the title, this is not intended as any kind of lecture, but rather as my views on dancing and as invitation for criticism and / or expansion.
I generally believe that slagging off people for "bad" dancing is a really bad habit, since taking to the dancefloor requires courage in the first place, which often the hecklers themselves lack. However, it would be folly to say that all who dance are doing equally well, so I rather strive to define some general principles that are essential for good dancing. Uniqueness is the basic cornerstone to build from, for there is little more abhorrent than seeing a full dancefloor doing the same glowsticking pattern or doing the "stomp" in unison. But uniqueness in itself is hardly enough, one must also strive for rhythm, to properly call it dancing, as moving your hands and / or feet randomly with little regard to the music does not beautiful dancing make. Uniqueness and rhythm together have already the materials for good dancing, but a further step should be taken to truly realize the fount of creative potential inherent in dancing. And that is variety or adaptation, striving to take the rhythm one step further and breaking through your own familiar techniques to follow the rhythm and melodies of a particular song even better, for even the best dancing gets boring eventually, if you limit yourself to one or two techniques. One could even say that creativity only truly gains form in improvisation and where is the improvisation in dancing in the same way every time?
Thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. I absolutely love dancing, and I strive when I can to improve myself. Ive got the rythm, some of the uniqueness but its the improvisation that I need to work on! Some people have the habits of doing the same thing over and over, while it works on a basic level its not quite it. And Im just trying to push out of that now I guess. Dancing rules, noone should ever be slagged off for dancing, no matter how good or obviously bad it is. If I see someone doing something they like doing and not caring how they look, then I think that person should be congratulated and given a big shiny medal.

"I dont know what im doing but im doing it" y because im serving a life sentance in not giving of fuck.
Well, I probably look like a complete fool whilst dancing, but I don't care. I just let my body move to the rythm in some sort of fashion that feels good.
Slagging off anyone's dancing is just crap really. We do what we do and enjoy it for what it is!
;)
does that mean my five year old daughter or one year old son should hide their heads in shame as they just can't stop dancing. me I know when to stop, when people start laughing too much.

i go to slimes for the music and a good ol' stomp. i've been complimented several times on my stomp-style, but that doesn't mean i'm a "good dancer"....
i just go with the flow, how the music takes me. as long as you are having fun, who cares what other people think?
Byakhiam
06-04-2006, 06:41 AM
SP and swab, like I said at the first post, I didn't mean to slag off anyones dancing. However, I am quite sure that you (and everyone else) think that someone's dancing looks better than another one's. Or does it not matter?
IW, not caring what others think is a good attitude, but I think you should be more proud of what you're doing.
I don't think that anyone dances any better than anyone else really, but certain words conjure up certain images for me. Particularly, I'm thinking of the word "stomp" ... which I have heard used at Slime many many times over the years ... it makes me imagine someone stamping their feet to the music, a bit like a really aggressive Michael Flatley ... perish the thought!!
Industrial Warrior, please don't be offended by this ... I think your dancing is really cool!! ... and it was a pleasure to meet you the other week.
industrialwarrior

sp, no offence taken ;) was good to meet you in person, indeed.
hopefully i should be at slimes in a few weeks, as you know i'm recovering from the op so i have to see how it goes.
and byakhiam - proud of what i am doing? what did you mean by that? that i don't show "pride" when i stomp? i'm not sure i understand the context of this...

I subscribe to the 'dance like nobody's watching' school of thought. I don't dance for anyone else but me, I dance how the mucis makes me feel. I don't doubt I look like some unco-ordinated out-of-control 50s B-movie robot or something, but I don't care. So there.
I don't mind what other peoples' dancing looks like - I'm probably not equipped to judge what's 'good dancing', so I don't even try...I do like it when I can see that someone's enjoying the music though....
Byakhiam
06-04-2006, 06:19 PM
IW, I mean that since you by all likelyhood do dance well, you shouldn't put yourself down by saying that your dancing sucks.
SP, but "stomp" is of the essence in "rivethead" style. Comparison to Michael Flatley is new though.
Crash_Dark, everyone is 'equipped' to judge what looks good, as long as you remember that it's your own opinion. I mean, as you say, you like to see someone enjoying the music, so don't you think that they dance well? Or even otherwise, you surely have some occasional moments when you look at someone dancing and think "Hey, that looks quite wow", don't you?

byakhiam,
i never said that my dancing sucks, or implied it either... at the same time i'm not trying to brag or be stupid and say i dance better than anyone else when it clearly is not the case as everyone has their own dance style.
different songs with different sounds and different tempos bring about different dance style variations - how boring would it be if everyone danced in exactly the same way, to every song?
a person's dance style is unique to them, kinda like a fingerprint. two people might dance in a similar way to a song, but it will never be identical. and we are all encouraged to be unique, are we not? years back, my dance style was all about headbanging - i was a total metalhead! times change, tastes change, and we evolve.
as long as a person is having fun, and yes, crash - it *is* great to see someone really enjoying a song - what does it matter if someone considers it "cool" or not? some people might go home pissing themselves with laughter over someone else's dance style, when the person they are mocking could be going home having had the night of their lives!

Chaotic, you just need determination and to hold tiny breaks every few songs. Stamina improves best by dancing.
IW, I don't mean that you (or anyone) should consider themselves simply the best dancer or anything like that. However, a bit of a "brag" might be appropriate sometimes, when one clearly dances 'better' than the average dancer, no?
how boring would it be if everyone danced in exactly the same way, to every song?
Precisely.

I honestly can't remember thinking 'wow' about anyone's dancing - maybe it's because I take little notice of the people on th e dancefloor, especially when I'm dancing? Just enough notice not to keep bumping into people...though I can remember seeing people who I thought were really enjoying themselves, so that doesn't quite work does it?
Crash_Dark, everyone is 'equipped' to judge what looks good, as long as you remember that it's your own opinion. So I've got no chance then...
My 'style' of dancing usually involves something along the lines of launching myself about like a pinball (though hopefully not bumping into anyone while I'm at it), and I run out of energy pretty quickly...
I don't have the time to go to a gym to get myself fit, though I keep promising myself that I'm going to take up karate again. Oh the joys of working full time and being a mum... (and being old ;-P).

I was always shy of dancing and had to be hammered before going onto the dancefloor. Now ive been going to slimes on a ragular basis, ive built up some confidence. Im not half as good as most dancers at the club, most of my moves were influenced by other people. But ive developed my own little style. I normaly dance with 2 glowsticks, but can quite easily dance away without them, (especially when a buddy nabs them for a bit ;) )

sod em! lol-the people that you said are laughing-why arent they dancing and enjoying themsleves?
byakhiam is right, not everyone has the courage to gt up and dance in the first place-shooting em down really isn the right move to make!
the only time i believe someone can be told to stop dancing is if they pose a threat to others-im talking about people being really ignorant of their surroundings, arms flailing and them not noticing to the point of them interefering with others enjoyment.
now,im not saying that ive never accidentally bumped into someone while dancing but the point of dancing to get lost the music and enjoy yourself in a club atmosphere.to do this you need to take into account that you arent the only person in the vicinity!
i love to dance,i probably make some strange movements but i try to take others into account whenb im dancing and not interfere with their movements :)

But I couldn't quite get the hang of Glowsticks, they just never looked right when I did it, heh...
Byakhiam

Just ditch the glowsticks, you'll look much better without them, when you get the hang of things better. Also, drinking messes up with your coordination. Just be brave and drink less.

Totally I like to vary everthing if I can as I get bored with the same thing over and over.. in the distant past i used to swap moves with mates but thats few and far between now.. I think in the past year i've only been inspired maybe once or twice by something I've seen & if I see something I like I try it. Occasionally people move well in slimes, if they do I usually can't help but tell them. Sometimes though... people just have the wierdest moves ya can't help but laugh, bad toxy.

Poi can be okay, if you're very careful or do it when the dancefloor is quiet. The upstairs table-height platform might actually be very good for it, if you still take a bit care to not swing it too low, but swinging at your waist height or higher will go over peoples heads, when standing on high platform like that.

hmm LOL my stomping is (fairly) unique, hee hee! Yes I do move my arms a certain way, though it depends on the tempo of the music and how much I am enjoying the tune playing.
And yes, it gives me an excellent cardio workout - i usually end up with arm and oblique muscles complaining the next day (gives you some idea as to how energetic I can be - and not including leg movements either!)
On the middle floor, before upstairs opens, i can sometimes be seen to do what i refer to as my "spinning around" dance; even that is a pretty poor description of it. Imagine the goth two-step, speed it up some, be more vigorous with your body movements and pivot as you go .. damn this is hard to explain.. guess I'll just shut up now before I say anything silly.. *oops, I think I did already*... hee hee! Best bet for this one is to actually witness it, that is, if you don't fall about laughing, LOL!

so thats your opinion of my dancing.
thats okay, i dont do it to entertain you or anyone else and at least i dont feel the need to point to people like a spoilt little, badly raised brat.
if i have a go at people then its not a personal attack as many of my friends do things i would not consider doing myself (like uv tubing in hair, wear pink, listen to trance etc etc) still i can accept that they do it, they feel good despite me thinking that it looks/is bad. even political differences can be bridged for the sake of enjoying each other's company.
to say "check out snowwy she does this or that" is rude nothing more or less playground bullies do that sort of thing.
as for your shaking in your boots, no need for that (also demonia boots oooh you must be such a rich one that you can afford something as good as that),
as i am usually very peaceful and try not to bother people too much.
sooo, why dont you do yourself and everyone else a favour and take your demonia boots and take a hike and learn how not to point at people as it is childish and badly mannered.

I'm glad that you have 'em quite cheaply yesss
so thats your opinion of my dancing.
thats okay, i dont do it to entertain you or anyone else and at least i dont feel the need to point to people like a spoilt little, badly raised brat.
if i have a go at people then its not a personal attack as many of my friends do things i would not consider doing myself (like uv tubing in hair, wear pink, listen to trance etc etc) still i can accept that they do it, they feel good despite me thinking that it looks/is bad. even political differences can be bridged for the sake of enjoying each other's company.
to say "check out snowwy she does this or that" is rude nothing more or less playground bullies do that sort of thing.
as for your shaking in your boots, no need for that (also demonia boots oooh you must be such a rich one that you can afford something as good as that),
as i am usually very peaceful and try not to bother people too much.
sooo, why dont you do yourself and everyone else a favour and take your demonia boots and take a hike and learn how not to point at people as it is childish and badly mannered.
WHOA! You've obviously had this kind of comment many times before, but that is not Jonny's fault and he had no idea i'm sure of what a nerve he was touching...
Chill out, don't care what people think so much or you'll end up as bad as the my little ponies...
(such a strong response to such a clearly inane comment denotes that you care a hell of a lot before you deny it!)

its even worse people stop me in other countries at festivals or something cos they have seen me. usually people also expect that i start talking to them because they recognise me. which is what rarely happens cos i really dont know what to say to them, so i say nothing much.
i chill out as and when i see fit, also what makes you think i was not chilled out?
the way i use words might be a bit heavy going for you guys but thats the way i am and yes, i have had this type of thing plenty of time. if i care or not is my problem, not yours Stoo.
and lastly, i dont have to behave/post in whatever way you deem suitable in order to differ from the "my little pony" fraction. in fact you seem to totally not know why i have said the previously about those people.
i really dont see a value in being a clothesrack, no idea, understanding nor love for the music, in fact their interest often does not go beyong cyberdog, what do the mates do and has everybody seen the newest hairdo
barely something i could be accused of... not only do i lack the figure to be a fashion dolly, neither do i feel dissatisfied with my military look.
anyway, i think the chances to end up as anything else but a person with a pension book and a buspass are fading, considering that my kid is older than you.

I have to say:
A) None of the above
B) It can be a thing with the music
C) Rock on!

:) yea, for workout music, you basically need hard-hitting euro-dance music.... nothing else does the job really. Search around on itunes for "euro club hits" or check this link:;) http://electricfilebox.com/tracks

This seems a rather old thread to resurrect, but seems interesting nevertheless.
I would stick to gabba/noise etc..., forget what you look like and just try to keep up. Then again 240 bpm hurts the bones.
So maybe, turned down to 140 or so, same dance moves but hurts muscles instead of ageing bones.

OK, so maybe I can tolerate the occasional "mainstream" track on the dancefloor (as long as there's plenty of dark and dirty grooves in there to keep the balance in check...) as some are heavier and more interesting than a lot of the EBM-pop out there (keep those on the middle-floor pleeeeease!) but given the choice (i.e. my own music collection / the internet) I prefer to forget that "euro-dance" ever existed.
as I've said many times; If you want to get dressed up, get a bit trashy (or not, if that's your preference) and have a boogie, go to Slimelight. If you want to hear music you like, stay at home.

Well I love to get dressed up and have a dance at Slimes.
I wouldn't say I was a great dancer, but I have fun and depending on how trashed I am I am normally in rythm, most of the time....
However my friends continually tell me that when I am dancing I look like I am driving a giant tractor, as my arms look like they are using a huge steering wheel, and I occasionally look like I am changing gear, which causes them no end of amusement! LOL!
Still, what do I care, I think we all have our own "unique" ways of dancing, and at least I don't do the "Goth two step" any more, LOL!

Yup, it really doesn't matter how you dance as long as you're having fun. I love dancing at Slimes, you'll always see me on the top floor platform (when it's noisy at least) bopping away with my green dreads a-flying. w00t! Dancing FTW!

Well, yes, sometimes it is such a joy to observe people who are good at following the rythm. The unique way of dancing is something to be celebrated. Most memorable comment about my dancing is that I "move like an overwined toy". Can't wait to hear music that will make me dance like that again. Maybe tonight?

Here's to hoping! I'll be there, top floor podium, cybermask and glowing green and stomping my little heart out :D

Bloody hell, yeah! 100%!
Won't ask The Changelings, DCD or Minor Threat when out for dancing :)
I love such things home, when am out I just wanna shake my bum (and it ends up too much.... uhm...) to EASY stuff -doesn't mean cheap btw- as yes I may even dance alone, but when is plenty of people around is a lot better :)
