I've seen his work at both the Saatchi Gallery in London and I think it was called 'The white cube' or something. Anyway, his work is kinda disturbing, and some people have called it discusting. In some pieces he uses dead animals, heres some (sorry if you don't like this, but the animals were already dead):

Art can be anything expressing yourself. And he doesn't just use animals, if you visited his work you might understand.

I'm sorry, but I agree with lilblu. Cutting an animal in half and then preserving it in formaldehyde is not "expressing yourself".

I really don't think that i'll ever understand. I find it obscene and abhorrent. As far as i'm concerned its not art in any way shape or form. But thats just my opinion. Everyones diffrent. :?

Yeah its down to opinion. And he isn't famous, I'm not sure he is trying to be.

He is definately famous (about as famous as any modern artist could be infact). He has his own bar called Pharmacy and hasn't he also won the Turner prize too?

yep he is most definately famous. im an art student and we've looked at his work. Personally I prefer another artist who we looked at. sorry i cant remember his name, but he gets dead animals and mixes parts from different animals to make strange looking creatues. It really is quite amusing :)

personally, i don't feel disgusted or disturbed by his work, but (off topic)what does annoy me are films like "The Cell", which blatantly rip off 'famous' artworks (the cut up horse or whatever animal it was in the film) and then attempts to use deep, meaningful metaphors to excuse their plagiarism. come on, how can anything with jennifer lopez in it be considered more than skin deep? they should stick her in a fishtank full of formaldehyde.
now that would be 'art'...
Most of the paintings in the national gallery were produced using animal by-products. "Calfskin glue" for example was (and still can be) used to prepare the canvas.
The fact is that vast majority of the population still eat meat (in a vacuum packed sanitized sort of way I suppose); which could be considered disgusting, or not - depending on your point of view.
Damien's cow is a reflection of society. It may not be a society you like very much but that's the way things are. Consider the way Toulouse-Lautrec was castigated during his life time because he painted pictures of prostitutes. Sometimes the truth isn't very pleasant but that's no reason to shoot the messenger.
Apart from 'The Pharmacy', remember that a few years ago Hurst opened a restaurant in Soho. It closed down pretty quickly because people didn't really enjoy their beef steaks when they could see exactly what it was they were eating.
If you want to see nice, anodyne paintings that no one could possibly object to - go to McDonald's.

Lol. I used to think the ones in Starburger were vastly superior. I cried the day my local one closed down.

And to get back on topic I seem to remember my brother (an artist) saying that Damien Hirsts work was derivative when Hirst first started getting major (public) recognition.
I've no strong feelings on it myself, but have been conditioned by the aforementioned brother to accept that art only needs to be art in the eye of the artist (hairy wheeled bakelite coffee table legs with pubes inserted into small melted holes for the hair, anyone?).
Damien Hirst .... art my arse! .... now there's a thought!! 8)

That picture reminded me of "the cell" with jenifer lopez I believe, when shes in this room with sliced up animals, which are alive and breathing, but you can see inside them. I haven seen the rest of his woks, but I from that picture I it looks really awesome. Its even educational.
I dont have any ethical probs with that. It would probably have become a hamburger anyways.
